I’m new to keto although previously ate paleo.
I have a pretty good understanding of macros and how to eat, however I do have a question about fasting.
I’m attempting the 16/8.
Is it important to wake at the same time everyday? I usually wake between 5 and 5:30.
If I break fast between those hours I should begin fasting again around 1pm.
Does this sound reasonable?
I haven’t attempted it during the work week yet, so I’m not sure if I will be able to accomplish this.
Is there such a thing as easing into the fast? Perhaps a 10/14 ratio at first?
Thanks.
Fasting question
When you are new, many of us don’t recommend fasting. Focus on nailing down keto first and fasting will come on its own time. If you want to share your age, height, weight, average calories, macros, and anything else with us we can make sure you get off to a great start in keto.
To answer your original question though, don’t think of fasting hours in the concept of a single day like Monday. If you did a 16/8, all the 16 doesn’t have to be on Monday. If you sleep 8 hours and wake up at 10AM, you’d eat at 6PM and your window would be over at 2AM the next day. But, maybe you stopped eat at 10PM. So, you’d go another 16 hours from 10PM to 2PM being the next time you eat. Hopefully that makes sense.
For me it just kind of came naturally. With my work I don’t have a set “lunch hour”, and sometimes don’t get a chance to eat at work (finding keto options isn’t always easy if I don’t plan ahead). As I became fat adapted I noticed I wasn’t as hungry throughout the day, which led to me just eating after work. I work 7am-3pm ish, and routinely wake up around 4-5am. I’ve gotten to the point where I consume my day’s calories between 4-6pm and it seems to be working for me.
Thank you for the insights.
I’m 41, 5’2”, 135lbs
Macros are:
Carbs 14
Fat 91
Protein 55
Calories 1038 (but having trouble sticking to that)
Also, I don’t have a gallbladder, lost it three and a half years ago. So I’m consistent with ACV and ginger consumption, sometimes supplement with ox bile to make sure I break down and absorb fats. I have a blood work scheduled to determine my fat soluble vitamin intake (A, etc) since malnourishment is a concern.
It doesn’t matter the WOE, sleep science recommends waking and going to bed at the same time every day. Some people suggest keeping your body guessing when it comes to food, but when it comes to sleep the science says your body craves a routine.
I find it easiest just to skip breakfast. My first meal is about 12:30 and my second and last about 7. If I finish eating around 7:30, then I’m at a 17:7 eating cycle. Sometimes 18:6.
I find it easiest as I’m already 7-8 hours fasted from sleep. Though I know some people prefer to skip their evening meal.
And I wish I could have the same schedule everyday. My job doesn’t allow this, so occasionally I adjust my IF timing if my hunger gets in the way. The important thing is that you aren’t going hungry while fasting.
Just starting of on fasting you just do the 12/12 every day. It eases you into the fasting idea and mostly done with sleep. The transition then to s 16/8 seemed to me a natural progression.
I thought the first rule of fasting was the same as the first rule of fight club (except for here on these forums, lol).
I’m doing the IF thing now. I pretty much stop eating at 7 PM and then don’t eat again until 11 AM the next day. It doesn’t matter what time I go to bed or wake up. It’s working well, so far! I get a little hungry in the morning, as I’ve always, in my life, eaten a big breakfast, because I always fell for that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” nonsense. Now, I just don’t eat breakfast, and it’s fine.
Good luck!
