Fasting Newbie

(Anna Juliet) #1

Hi everyone,
I’m going to start my first fast tomorrrow, 36 hours broken with a night out with friends (I will be eating drinking keto)

Does anyone have any advice for me today?

A little backgrand from me.
30 years old, PCOS, pre-diabetic, reactive hypoglycaemia, 80kg, 5,11", from England.

I’ve been doing KETO on advise from my endo and dietian to control the RH for 3 months. It’s fantastic and I’m doing really well on it, no low blood sugars. Also as a side effect it has lifted the veil of post natal depression I have suffered with for 5 years. I’m never going back to my old WOE, however I have only lost about 8lb. Which I wasn’t worried about at first but now all my other symptoms have reduced I would like to lose some weight and get my insulin resistance sorted.
I’ve just made a beef bone broth to get me through my first fast.

Also I am addicted to the podcasts, listened to 20 hours in last 2 weeks. I love carl and Richard, completely think like me, I love the science, and keeps me committed.

Thanks all
Anna

Just enjoy it. Relax. Learn from it. And monitor your Blood Glucose.

It will get easier over time.

Great advice from a fasting pro.

You can do it!

I completed my first fast last week, kind of did it on a whim. My tip is to stay busy, especially during the hours where you are used to cooking or eating. For me the few waves of hunger happened when I was not occupying myself during my normal meal times.

I ended up going for 100 hours and plan on posting my experience soon.

Best of luck!

Well done Sue. I’m hoping to do between 24 and 48 hours. I’m at work super busy so hopefully I’ll be ok, I’ll have an early night too :joy:. Thanks for the tips. Did u use bone broth at all?

work out to exhaustion before you break your fast.

good luck. First 36 hours or so is the toughest.

I slept earlier almost every night as well. I drank bone broth from a box, I think it’s really just concentrated broth/stock. But I did manage to find one without carbs. I had about 1 cup on day 2 when I felt a little weird and loopy, and then on day 4 right before breaking my fast. I also added Himalayan pink salt to it because I love that stuff! I even ate salt by itself sometimes.

Everything else was water, black coffee, and black tea.

Keep us updated!

What is the purpose of this?

i try to tear up the muscle as much as possible and target the intramuscular fat. Lots of reasons. see what you can take and push yourself (mental and physical) Take advantage of all the HGH in your system and utilize the Protein and minerals your consuming. My refeeds are mostly Protein and I have a problem staying in keto. I have an idea on why that is. The muscle exhaustion help you keep the strength. I do consecutive cutting/fasting one re feed every 72 hours until i get my bodyfat where i want it. Once its there its back to bulking. Cutting is kind of a break for me. I find attaining hypertrophy much much harder than melting fat.

hey… careful with alcohol. not a drinker and never tried it while fasting but i have heard it can knock you on your backside pretty hard. Might want to check into it if you have not already.

I follow the rules on fasting. calories under 30 for the day. I dont get all this fasting and drinking bone broth and BPC (some do). Once you break the fast over 30 calories (somewhere in there) the body starts changing some things up from what i remember. HGH and adrenaline changes maybe.

I did do 1/2 bulion cubes which i estimated at 2-3 calories because my stomach would not let my head stop running. Now I just guzzle water and take some vitamins.

Thanks David. That all makes sense. Luckily I don’t drink alcohol anymore. I can’t cope with hangovers with 2 children :joy:

So hour 11 of the fast… I was up through the night a lot with baby 2 (she keeps falling out of her crib:woman_facepalming:t4:) I’m kinda regretting starting fast today now :joy: I just want to eat. But I’m going to have a pint of water and a coffee. I’ve got my (homemade :raised_hands:) bone broth for lunch (with pink himilayan salt thanks @sueoh) to take to work.

Since this is my first fast, I’m taking it easy I may go without broth next time but I feel like I need some kind of meal substitute this time just for that meal time routine with the kids.

Thanks for the support guys. I’ll keep you updated after I get back from work.

I feel you. i just started thinking about you having a glass of wine or two and getting in an accident on the way home because you shocked your system so hard.

Hey another tip. when I start a refeed after a 72 hour I start with just a bite of something really small. Like a couple of cherry tomatoes or something. I jumped into a plate really fast early on and started getting some bad stomach pains. Kind of like I shocked My stomach too hard and it wasnt used to it. So I started just taking a couple of nibbles to get the stomach activated and waiting five or ten minutes then slowly progress into my meal. I think i picked it up on a survival show but I have never had a problem since. something to think about maybe.

So, you join this forum, which is dedicated to eating to stay in keto, and you tell others to follow your protocol, while not being in keto eating loads of protein.

I don’t get it. Why not go share your experiences in a non-keto forum?

I have never left keto since day one. You cant eat that much protein if your not tearing up muscle.

I get the feeling the protein differences have a lot to do with how much nuclei one has in the muscle and not necessarily size. Say someone who has never trained or done athletics and led a sedentary lifestyle. Then they have to be really dialed in on that Protein ratio. Just an idea floating around i cant seem to shake. Could be wrong.

I can tell you that I look specifically for high protein whenever i eat and dont even worry about it. i do eat a good bit of fat but only healthy fats if possible.

i had my mom on this. She lost tons of weight and felt great. Then she bought a cookbook. Started making all kinds of fat bombs, cookies whatever. Next thing you know she was stalling getting discouraged and breaking out of keto. Then she just gave up and has put most of it back. I tried to steer her right and did so for probably four months but she fell into that keto junk food trap and I couldnt pull back. This is a pattern i have gone through with a lot of women. They seem to think that they can get around sugar junk food with keto junk and cant ever shake that addiction to sweets. I tell them its a trap… saw it with adkins many years ago but people just do want to hear it. They are convinced they can outsmart the system.

Guys seem to follow a different pattern. The just eat massive amounts of meat and dairy and blow off important aspects of nutrition. They loose weight, hit a wall, and dont adapt. another one is giving up beer LOL. Thats a big one.

Its really hard for married couples who are overweight and one is committed and the other is not. I have seen wives literally sabotage their husbands when they drop all their excess bodyfat and the husbands would not eat their food anymore. 2 times i have seen this.

You stated you have a problem staying in keto

#17

good catch. i had to go back and read it again. It is supposed to say i have no problem staying in keto. Sorry for the confusion. i understand where your coming from now.

so again. Never been out of keto since i started. i dont ever want to go through that metabolic shift again. Will I ever? Not unless I have no other choice. I sure am never going back to sugar, bread, and junk carbs again. It would have to be some sort of vegetable or fruit that has some major benefits that i cant get otherwise.

I like keto and am totally comfortable with it. Its easy. Its also a godsend if your obese. It will drop all the major excess weight with very little effort and allow you to physically be able to exercise to get to a healthy lifestyle and rebuild your body. Its also the perfect starting point to get you to begin conditioning to fasting which IMO is the real game changer. Fasting is really rough if your not fat adapted. You might do it once but it will be hard to incorporate on a regular basis or to run consecutive fasting and refeeds. Your basically looking at a metabolic shift every time. Totally different with keto.

Yes when I had my broth I couldn’t help myself and had 2 servings which I think was around 80 calories. I definitely experienced some hunger again the next day, though it was minor.

Coming up to hour 23, I’m going ok, not hungry, just an empty feeling (that I would of previously described as hungry) but I have no hunger pangs.
I’ve done 16/8 a few times so this has prob helped. 25 hours to go :raised_hands: Then I’m off out for a Keto curry.

Ketones
Tuesday 0hrs 0.6 mmol
Wednesday 23hrs 1.3 mmol

Just finished my 46 hour!!! Fast!! I managed to do more that I wanted. Wasn’t half as bad as I thought. Ketones are up. 2.2 which I’m really happy with. 4lb weight loss, which half will prob be water but that’s ok.
Happy!!
Another in a couple of weeks, I may push it to 3 days
