(What The Fast?!) #1

My b/f takes Adderal every day and if he doesn’t take it with food, he gets sick. He has to take it in the morning (not the afternoon) and I’m trying to figure out how to work in an IF schedule. I’d like to keep a 16/8 schedule - skipping breakfast and eating between 12 and 8. Any thoughts on what he could eat with his pill that won’t raise insulin but will keep him from feeling nauseous? For those of you that take medicines that need to be accompanied by food, what do you eat with your meds during IF or extended fasting?

I’m also going to see if he’d be okay doing an eating window between 7am and 3pm instead, but I prefer the later window, and it’s much easier to be on the same schedule.

He could try a fat like coconut oil. I have also heard that some chia seeds with water works well with meds.

Thanks @Daisy ! I made him BPC this morning with about 1T butter and 1T coconut oil and that didn’t go over very well for him. :frowning: I’ll try chia seed pudding tomorrow!

Ideally with fasting you want as close to no protein or carbs as possible. I also have issues with nausea when I fast and have yet to find the perfect solution. Coconut oil on its own might be better - I just down a tablespoon or two. I have always just had chia seeds straight with water but then I don’t mind the fact that they are like drinking frogspawn  The point is that either of those two options should have a low impact on interrupting fasting which is what you are aiming for I think? Ultimately though, you just have to find what works through trial and error. Good luck. x

Oh and electrolytes. And hydration. Both have been cited as essential by Megan Ramos on Fasting Talk to battle slight nausea. He needs to drink plenty of water on top of tea/coffee.

I do better with some coconut oils and heavy cream instead of butter…

What do you mean it didn’t go well for him? From personal experience, too much coconut oil can give me the gurgle guts. I find that I have to start with a smaller amount of coconut oil, a half tablespoon, and work myself up to a full T.

@rosibear He eats coconut oil all the time - and I make him BPC often. I meant that he took the medicine just with bulletproof coffee and no food and he fet nauseous.

You could also try putting it in butter.

That’s what I usually make for him (butter and coconut oil in coffee).

I only eat breakfast (and occasionally not even that), but twice a day I take metformin, which causes nausea on an empty stomach. So in the evening (and morning if doing an extended fast), I take it with two tablespoons of unmodified potato starch dissolved in water. I have not tested it myself, but others have told me that they have tested their response to potato starch, and it seems to have no effect (up or down) on their blood sugar. And it seems to provide adequate protection, because I’ve never had nausea problems taking my pills this way.
