Fasting and High Blood Sugar

(Cheryl Hall) #1

I’m concerned because I’m 38 hours into a fast (water only, salt, and black coffee) and I just took my Glucose – its 146mg. Last night before bed it was 85mg.

I don’t have a blood ketone tester because the strips are just not in my budget at this time - my urine strip showed low Ketones and my cheap Greenwon was at 0.3bac.

Maybe I’m burning fat and it’s releasing Glucose into my blood? I’ve heard Megan Ramos say that in their Clinic they don’t worry too much about higher blood Glucose during fasts.

Concern? Or KCKO? :grinning:

If it were me, I wouldn’t worry about it and would KCKO, but to answer your question:
So, while I agree that IF is part of our heritage, and that it can be helpful in certain situations, I don’t believe it’s an appropriate strategy for everyone.

Why? Because fasting can elevate cortisol levels. One of cortisol’s effects is that it raises blood sugar. So, in someone with blood sugar regulation issues, fasting can actually make them worse.
I see in your profile you’re T2 diabetic for 30 years, so it might be dawn effect.

KCKO and test your glucose later.

Agreeing with the releasing more fat and generating more glucose theory. This may be the lowest insulin level your body has seen in years and there’s an increase in lipolysis (fat exiting adipose) because of it. Your liver will produce both ketones and glucose from the extra fat in circulation.
Check your glucose later in the day and see if it’s gone back down. Otherwise, KCKO.
