Fastest way back to ketosis?

(LeeAnn Brooks) #1

Let’s just say that hypothetically someone, after almost 14 weeks of straight ketosis with no cheats, had a very minor slip up with a small sliver of birthday cake followed by a possible binge of dark chocolate and peanut butter, showed no ketones for the very first time the next morning.

What would be the fastest way back into ketosis? A couple good days of eating lots of fat with little to no carbs (like all carnivore) or fasting?

Asking for a friend…

(Allie) #2

Just get back to eating keto properly and forget it.

Fasting

Tell your friend that no-one is perfect, and you…errr I mean she probably needed to have a binge because she has been too strict. Back on the Keto wagon, and keep doing the things she did for the first 14 weeks! No need to panic. KCKO. :keto:

(Omar) #5

I would say fast 2 days on HWC and water

(Sarah Slancauskas) #6

Tell your lovely ‘friend’ to just get back to keto foods and forget the slip up. It’s a normal part of developing a new eating habit. After 14 weeks strict keto she should be fat adapted so should get into ketosis again quite quickly by just eating a Ketogenic diet as before.

One meal only caused a temporary suspension of lipolysis. Probably with little or no possibility of adding glycogen. The carbs stayed in the digestive system, so are quickly used. Resumption of the fat based pattern will put you back into lipolysis, but ketone production may lag as the body uses available glucose, even though lipolysis has resumed. No real need to fast, but it’s fine if you do. Larger consumption of carbs, say over a day or so, creating the possibility of glycogen creation, is best dealt with by fasting until hungry.

Just KCKO. Your, I mean your friends, body just has to use up the glycogen then it will be right back to using fat for fuel. Just tell your friend that it happens sometimes and not to view it as, “well, I screwed up so I might as well eat the whole cake and entire jar of PB, etc.” and keep it going for days. You’ll be fine!

Fastest way is fasting fast. :grinning:

Of course, it has to be for a friend, cause we know you don’t care for peanut butter:rofl::rofl:

(Brian) #11

Fagetaboutit. Non-issue. Really.

If it makes someone feel better to fast for a few hours, or even a day or two, that’s fine. And it’s probably the fastest way back to ketosis. But seriously, if just eating normally as we do in keto fashion, they’ll be back in ketosis quickly anyway. It’s probably a difference of a few hours.

Hope the birthday cake was thoroughly enjoyed! (And the dark chocolate and peanut butter may not have been quite as bad as they seemed at the time.)

Thanks for this, definetly didn’t know this, I had Chinese a month ago and was worried about it (was even very small amount).

(Consensus is Politics) #13

Don’t even worry about it. You will get back into ketosis nearly as fast as fasting anyway.

That being said, whenever I had questionable food, I just have bacon and eggs or steak for my next few meals. Plenty of fat. I suppose it might save a day by fasting. But I doubt it.

Just keep calm and, you know the rest. :cowboy_hat_face:

Has anyone a view on fasting from let’s say 7pm to 2pm followed by keto diets? From what I read about I.F & keto it seems the best of both worlds.
Thoughts ???

I think your hypothetical friend needs to go to Costco (where she works), find the biggest bar of hypothetical chocolate in the store, buy 3 of them and then stuff her hypothetical face with ALL the chocolate. Go on, you know you want to…

(Irma Reitz) #16

:joy::joy:. Just start over and don’t beat yourself up.

I got into ketosis in 24 hrs by not eating carbs and 20:4 fasting. My last meal night prior was a salad, avocado, and a protein. 20 hrs later I was at 1.8 mmol.

Sir, I’ve held back on saying this before. But your avatar pic reminds me of Colin Mockery (sp?) Canadian comedian. I only know him from “who’ s Line is it anyway”.

Then you go and post this. I could hear Colin in his ironic voice saying just that. I was rolling on the floor.

Cheers!

And a Keto Vitae!

Yep - 24/36 hour water fast. Works every time!

I’ve done 1 and 3, but I’m finding any fasting, even IF a bit of a challenge right now. Since this slip up, my cravings have come back full force and my hunger signals are all over the place.
One more reason not to cheat.
I’ve been compensating the sweet cravings with Diet Coke. Not the best thing I know, but better than actual sweets. Now I’m trying to wean off that, but my ketones are still only showing trace after a full week and my hunger is too great to skip meals.
I’m aiming to stop all Diet Coke as of today. I hope that will start to correct things back, and then I can get back to IF and even EF again.
