Extremely sleepy after meals

(Laci) #1

Hi all!! I’m really new to keto. 4 days to be exact. Though I was paleo for years so possibly borderline keto on and off.

My question is this…after eating (typically happens with lunch) I get sooo sleepy. Like if I don’t close my eyes right now I won’t make it type of sleepy.

I did a test on my blood sugar and it stays pretty normal. Mid 70s to low 80s.

Does anybody have any advice? I did read it could be digestion issues. Not making enough stomach acid to digest food but I’ve never had this problem eating paleo or even SAD to be honest.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How large are your meals?

I find that when using an IF or OMAD protocol I have to consume a lot of calories in a short period of time. When I eat large meals I get tired. Are you consuming a bunch of calories at one time?

I only encounter sleepiness after a meal if the meal has excessive carbs.

What are these meals looking like that do this to you specifically? What does a typical day of eating look like for you?

Breakfast 3ish ounces sausage with collards cooked in bacon fat
Lunch is typically a fatty meat such as chicken thighs two low carb veggies broccoli and mashed cauliflower or something like that with lots of butter on top
Dinner is some variation of lunch

Today I got super sleepy after having a snack that included a handful of olives, cheddar with butter on top and .5 ounces of salami. So I know carbs aren’t the issue. I did check blood sugar and it never went over 85…and then back to 75 after an hour. So I know it’s not this huge spike in blood sugar.

I’m always pessimistic about equipment. 20 years in the USAF as an aircraft weapons technician, I learned you can only trust the instrument as far as you can throw the guy that calibrated it. My first thought when I read the original post was blood sugar. I stick with my gut feelings until they are proven otherwise. Your meter should allow for it to be tested in some way. With mine, there is a small vial of gluco-testing-stuff🧐Yes, that’s a technical term. It doesn’t calibrate, but it lets you know for certain the meter is reading in the correct ball park🤠.

From there, maybe too much protein? I feel like that when I eat too much protein. Which has the effect of spiking my glucose. I don’t feel so as sleepy as a really run down feeling. Like I just did a lot of exercise, without muscle fatigue.

I almost always have BPC loaded with coconut oil with or for my lunch. That is like crack in a cup for me!

Does the same thing happen when you eat something salty?

Otherwise, I had a somewhat similar experience when first getting into ketosis. I found my body wanted to sleep more, which I chalked up to it wanting to sleep to heal.

I experienced extreme sleepiness after eating yesterday and I’m convinced the cause is what you eat. I was eating at a restaurant and my meal was fish-highest in protein.

Hi @Lisa_Stevens!

Just a tip, you may want to check the last update date of a thread you are replying to.
Of course, all comments are welcome anytime but, issues last touched upon a year ago are probably not as important to deal with vs. current questions and discussions.

I know this is an old post, but it sounds like low stomach acid. You need hcl pills. Your food is not digesting, and it makes you sleepy.
