I finally bit the bullet and bought the good stuff. Everyone talks about how amazing kerrygold is (and I agree) but I wonder if anyone here uses the French counterpart presidente butter. I tasted the two side by side and it was very interesting. The French one tasted almost yogurty but still buttery and has 10mg more salt per tbspn. I can’t decide which is better. Just curious if anyone has an opinion they’d like to share.
European butter brands and taste
Do you know if cows in France are pastured? While I love the taste, it’s the grass-fed aspect that means I’ll pay the premium price.
I didn’t like the French one at all, it was bland like the Tesco value butter. Kerrygold is not easy to get here as I use unsalted (for my coffees), so instead I use Countrylife which is really nice.
Here in Norway Rørossmør is my go to butter. All of Røros dairys products are organic, unfortunately they’re not available throughout

I just got back from France and I had a lot of butter there. And I love Kerrygold.
I think that French butter tends to be creamier than most American butters. The cows there are pastured. The “localy grown, farm to table” thing that seems to be catching on in America is just the way they do things in France.
I didn’t pay any attention to butter brand names in France, so I don’t know if I have had President. But I did love the bowls of butter they bring you with every meal. It’s probably meant to go on the baguette, but it was pretty yummy on top of the omelet instead.
@Sqeeze I have been keeping the blocks of Kerrygold on hand for snacks (just a bite or two of butter sometimes is all I need) and the tub of spreadable on the counter for my coffee and topping other snacks. Went to Ingles last night because they have the whole milk Greek yogurt I like and also a frozen mashed cauliflower that no one else carries – but they had no Kerrygold, at least not in the regular butter section. So thought I would try the President brand, it was cheap enough. Took a bite when I got home & I swear it had a cheese-like flavor…still not quite sure if I like it! May be an acquired taste; still better than a slab of Land O Lakes which I keep on hand for cooking.
Alas, @Decarb we only have Sam’s Club in our area at present. Looking forward to the day there is Costco – think I’d belong to both!
They do definitely have different tastes. To me the President butter has an almost yogurty taste. I like it melted though! It has a lot of flavor. I will either get it or Kerry gold depending on what’s on sale.
I actually found Kerry gold in the tub not sticks at our sams club the other day. It was not with the other butter but with the gourmet cheeses. It honestly is cheaper to buy it at Publix though around here at least.
The best one I think can be widely available (I buy it in Lidl) is Pilos.
Bonjour!
I’m French decent, so I would have to believe that the passion of French culinary arts would regard health as important as presentation. Here’s a bit of history I was able to find for you:
Beurre Président is a lactic butter (unsalted or salted) made with the finest milk from the Normandy region in France, which gives its distinctive, refined flavour.
At Président, the art of butter & cheese is a family passion. They began in France over 80 years ago, and today Président is Europe’s leading cheese expert. Their products are crafted using traditional methods by the company’s master cheesemakers. Discover the delicious cheeses that brought Président from the heart of Loire Valley to the head of your table.
While this is still a mass-produced butter, they take their butter very seriously in France. It’s probably still fancier than most other choices in your local grocery. It is made in Normandy, one of France’s foremost dairy regions, with milk from grass-fed cows.
C’est magnifique! .
