Enjoying Mezzetta Pesto

(Bruce Pick) #1

I have no connection or relationship with Mezzetta or their pesto - aside from the fact that I like it!
Very flavorful. A bit salty but very tasty.
High fat, low carb, low protein, and ostensibly high quality ingredients.

It’s in my local supermarkets (US northeast), which is the only reason I found it. Other pre-made pestos that I found had unwanted types of vegetable oils, which rejected them from my consideration.

The 'serving size" is 2 tbsp, which is about double of what I usually consume at one time - so my actual per-serving macros for this are about half of what’s on the label.

I haven’t tried their pesto but I have always liked their products. I live in Central California so local stuff. They’re Jalapeño Stuffed Olives are great. I’ve always wanted to try the Anchovy stuffed. They make great giardiniera and pickled peppers. I used to get a spicy red pepper relish that my local store quit carrying long ago. :cowboy_hat_face:

That’s what I found: they all had soybean or similar oils. I’m surprised you were able to find this one.

Lactic acid and ascorbic acid can be GMO?

At the risk of diving down a rabbit hole,
Ascorbic acid is vitamin C, which can be sourced from plant material - so I suppose it could be sourced from a GMO version of a plant. But I’m sure most Vit C is now synthetically produced.

I don’t know where lactic acid could come from. Presumably biological sources are possible.

That’s a good find - I too have had trouble finding quality jarred pesto!

And I love a good basil pesto!!!

A couple weeks ago I made a ton of my own though, heavy on the Cello organic Parmesan and sea salt, using Bragg’s amazing organic EVOO, with red pepper flakes and generous raw garlic. I intended a concentrated sort of pesto, and it worked! To use it, I take a tblsp per person, and add a tblsp of EVOO per person to dilute it for tossing organic edamame pasta or lightly steamed veg. It’s esp nice spread on on a Tribali mediterranean burger patty with fresh melted raw goat cheddar, I have learned through experience. :star_struck:
