I am a newbie and have been struggling the last few weeks. My 1st 3 weeks I lost 13 pounds and was not hungry but I was having trouble being “regular”. I am starting my 5th week and final lost another pound and did have some bowel movements yesterday. But, I had to cheat to make that happen. I ate 3 cups of popped popcorn cooked with coconut oil. I don’t know if that made things work or not - but I was happy that things moved. I have been using psyllium for about a week. Is eating popcorn OK if I only do it once or twice a week and I use kernels that I pop in the microwave using coconut oil? Also, I saw an ad for 0 carb bread that has oat fiber and wheat protein isolate - is this ok to eat with keto? I hope I am out of my stall and start getting regular movements.
Eating popcorn
Personally, I would avoid popcorn altogether. Maybe when you hit your goal an occasional popcorn treat might be okay. Even then I would hesitate. I’m very strict regarding any carbs in my diet. I’m my case, a few cheats here and there and the next thing you know I’m back to eating ice cream and Froot Loops.
As far lack of BMs, maybe more magnesium? I’ve had to use milk of magnesia once but the magnesium citrate in my ketoaide also seems to help.
The only bread I eat is Oopsie or cloud “bread.” I don’t trust commercial so-called low carb bread.
Of you are looking for a good low carb bread, I highly recommend Joseph’s pita bread. They are really good, 6 net carbs, and very reasonably priced!! Definitely a great option when you need a bread fix but don’t want to cheat!! They are very thin so I have also sliced them down the middle and used for tortillas, chopped them up and baked them in the oven, drizzled with olive oil, for pita chips!!! Don’t give up, it gets easier. I have lost almost 20 lbs now, fairly new myself, and couldn’t be happier!!! Good luck!!
Magnesium supplements tablets will do the job, make sure you will be home for a while. Take 100% of the daily allowance. Each tablet is usually less.
Are you sure it was the popcorn that helped or could it have been the coconut oil?
Before going Keto I would eat popcorn 2-3 times a week and stayed regular. I was using sunflower oil then.
In the future I will count the popcorn in my daily allowance of carbs (once I have reached my goal).
The reason I ask is coconut oil is partially MCT.
Pure MCT oil has a tendency to cause digestive issues like diarrhea if you’re not used to it. I’ve purposly taken it to help when constipated.
Probably not, unless you are very portion controlled and very strict with carbs otherwise.
Constipation is one of the symptoms of lack of sodium. If you increase your salt intake, that should help. Aim for 2-1/2 teaspoons a day, including the salt naturally present in your food.
