Eating OMAD and Wanting a Treat

So, I’m doing OMAD, but sometimes I want a treat. My main goal of OMAD is keeping both insulin and glucose low. However, sometimes I just want to have chocolate “milk” or something like that. I do usually take some MCT oil to help boost ketones.

My question is: would having a serving ofKeto Cocoa Powder derail my OMAD progress, as it has 0 net carbs and 1g protein?

Ingredients:
Inulin
Cocoa powder
(less than 2% natural flavors, sodium caseinate, salt, steviol glycosides (stevia leaf extract)

If it fits in with your macros enjoy! I often make a hot chocolate with a mix of cream and almond milk and some 100% chocolate melted in with a couple of spoons of erythitol. If I’m feeling really decadent I add a splash of brandy!
Eat well and enjoy life!

I guess the only real way to know its effect is to actually test to see what it does to glucose and ketones.

Its good to relax a little and mix it up a bit! Confuse your body!
I try and mix OMAD, TMAD, keto and carnivore and an occassional 50g carb day. I get on better than doing the same thing all the time.
Exogenous ketones aren’t necessary.
Dr Ken Berry explains well on YouTube 'exogenous ketones '. Sorry I don’t know how to link.

If you’re eating OMAD to keep insulin levels down for as long as possible, then I would say have the hot chocolate as part of your meal, or soon after as dessert. Having it in the middle of the day as a stand alone will cause your insulin levels to rise due to the stevia, which would defeat the purpose of the OMAD.

I agree that this will interfere with the OMAD benefits. But really who cares? I agree with @CrackerJax that it’s a good idea to mix things up, changing your daily routine keeps your body a little confused and it will overlook less food days if it sometimes gets more than usual too. Eating when you’re hungry is the goal and if you’re having to force OMAD sometimes you might try TMAD on those days when you’re feeling like you need more. Just try to minimize the eating window on TMAD to keep insulin low for 16-20 hours and you’ll benefit still. :cowboy_hat_face:

Get raw organic cacao powder… it has nearly zero insulin response and should be fine… similar to coffee. I add it to my coffee with salt, stevia, MCT and ACV. I drink it very cold.

OMAD is basically fasting and there are many interpretations of what constitutes breaking a fast… for me, it’s about maintaining low glucose and this drink has a glucose reducing and ketone increasing effect.

So my testing yesterday gave these results:

4:13pm T0: BG 83, BK 1.7
4:51pm T40: BG 83, BK 1.8
5:24pm T70: BG 83, BK 1.4
6:48pm T160: BG 75, BK 1.8 (before supper - that’s why the odd time)

I’m thinking of testing again today, but trying to be a bit more consistent…or do you think it has minimal effect?

I’m lost about what you think this means, it looks healthy to me. I’m a no test keto person. I have never used anything. Do I doubt my ketosis? Never. I just trust the process. I’m not sure you can really get any meaningful data from this testing, insulin and BG are two different things. Maybe you’re just looking for BG levels and if you had your drink during that period of time it doesn’t look like much happened that’s not normal without the drink. If you eat a few too many carbs you might get knocked out of ketosis for a while. But stressing and testing a lot is counterproductive and sometimes obsession over macros can be the same way. Just relax and trust the process, listen to your body, do your best with food quality and eat when you’re hungry, not because the clock says to. If you’re needing food have some. If a drink that tides you over till meal time that’s okay too. I like green tea when I am trying to wait for eating. Stevia is a known insulin spiker, not BG. :cowboy_hat_face:

That looks fine. I calculate my GKI to know my zone…

So GKI = G / 18 / K

At 75G, 1.8K, you’re at 2.3 GKI. Between 1-3 is deep ketosis. Below 1 is extreme and will put you in autophagy (old cell turnover). Between 3-6 is normal ketosis.

So measure… drink you cacao… wait an hour… measure again… if you’re in the same zone, then you’re fine.

T0 - BG 84, BK 0.7, GKI 6.66
T30 90, 1.5, 3.33
T60 86, 0.9, 5.3
T90 89, 1.2, 4.12
T150 88, 1.5, 3.26

So it looks like it didn’t have too much of an effect on glucose, yet ketones bounced around some.

When glucose is low, Ketones are a function of activity and energy use… if you use energy, it drops ketones and then it fills back up again.

Think of it as a battery indicator … your liver takes a little time to make more (charge you up) unless you’re very fat adapted…
