Eating crappy before keto

#1

So me and my SO are about to start a keto diet and we are eating super unhealthy this week to get it out of our system. Last night we had Mc Donald’s for dinner and tonight were ordering some pizza. Oh yeah and eating up all the carbs in the house until they’re gone. I’m starting to get sick of cheez-it’s and cookies. Lol.

What bad final meals did you have before changing your eating habits?

Still eat Mc D / BK whilst on Keto. Just no bun please!

I didn’t. My diet was clean before keto and my drift into keto was accidental (yes really).

That’s a little like saying I’m going to lie in bed for a week and then join a gym and workout everyday…

Because of your crappy preparation, you’re probably gonna feel like crap during the first few days of HFLC eating.

Oh well, I’ll survive.

I was switching from 40c/30c/30p. So I just cut out breads, pastas, potatoes, and beans. I went keto via Atkins induction meal plan, then drifted into LCHF with 20-50 carbs per day, mostly lower, but sometimes higher.

Hope the carbage doesn’t keep you from going into ketosis sooner, rather than later.

Good luck on your Journey

I got into ketosis accidentally, as well. I started by eliminating sugar and sweets from my diet, because I finally got serious about my sugar addiction. Started feeling so good, I stopped eating pasta, rice, and bread. Liked being low-carb but still found myself bingeing on cauliflower and the like, so finally made a conscious decision to keep carbs as low as possible. I love that eating fat to satiety means that I don’t overeat but am never hungry. (Of course, carb cravings are a whole different ball game, but I’m learning how to deal with them. They’re a lot easier to manage when I’m eating as few carbs as possible.)

You will…Just remember: salt and water. Both are equally important to proper hydration. Buy some pink himalayan salt now, and salt all the things. Put it on food. Put it in water. Eat it straight if you have to. As you start to lose water weight, you’re going to flush out your electrolytes. If you don’t start to replace them, you’re going to know it very quickly. The keto flu that people refer to is mostly a combination of dehydration and a cold turkey approach to carb addiction. Choosing to binge right before this hard break is already going to bring about unavoidable things like increased hunger and cravings. That sucks, but you can power through it. However, carb-loading will also increases water retention, which means you’re going to have all that much more water rush out of your system in the next few days. Best case scenario: That’s going to make it much more difficult to not feel real shitty.

So, start taking salt and water like you life comfort depends on it.

Also, the salt should provide enough electrolytes for you, but I always recommend that people grab a bottle of chelated magnesium when they start keto. There is absolutely nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night with both legs cramped up, and absolutely refusing to cooperate. (Protip: If this happens, it’s a sign that you’ve hit E on your magnesium.)

I avoided sugar for many, many, years before keto as I used to have issues with candida, but at that time I had never made the sugar / starch association. When I started being more conscious of my eating, in early 2015, I started buying meats from http://www.musclefood.com and in absolute honesty, I was short of time so often cooked a steak or some other piece of meat on its own and just ate that. After I noticed weight coming off even faster, I did some digging and found my lazy living was called ketogenic - that’s when I stepped it up and got properly focused on macros etc and consciously cut out starches etc, and from there my chronic reflux (that had started in 1995 when I was pregnant) disappeared completely and I felt better so carried on. The only issue I had was kidney / bladder pain for a couple of months but I’ve suffered urinary issues since early childhood so think it was just a combination of past history and keto adaptation.
