Eating apples on keto

#1

How bad would it be to include an apple on keto? Do the medicinal purposes out weigh the carbs?

Unless you can come up with a GOOD medicinal reason, there is no adequate reason to include an apple in traditional ā€œ20gā€ keto (a large apple is 25 net carbs).

If you are just doing LCHF and that is good enough to serve your purposes or keep you in ketosis and thus have a higher carb budget e.g. 50/75/100g then go for it. It is just slowish release fructose (the worst sugar to many) but not a problem within that regime.

There isn’t really anything medicinal about an apple, minor vitamins and fiber can all be gotten elsewhere without a load of sugar.

ā€œAn apple a day… generally contributes to chronic medical conditionsā€ :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Firstly, I’m unclear as to what you mean by the ā€˜medicinal purposes’ of apples? What do you believe are the benefits of apples?

Secondly, you could take a IIFYM (if it fits your macro) perspective that a small apple is 14g of carbs ā€˜fits’ your daily allocation.

If you want crunch, then think of celery, cucumber or bacon as a substitute.

Before my wife went keto, she would slice up an apple and I’d have a slice or two. So if you figure it into your daily alotment, then go for it.

But I’m with @Capnbob and @LouiseReynolds. What ā€œbenefitsā€ do you think you’re getting?

I would not do it.

I think the 20 grams carbs are spread
over the day not in one spike. just a thought

I wouldn’t choose to eat a whole apple anyway (or apple at all anymore since I’m pretty much ZC/carnivore now)but I’d actualy argue that you’re far better off taking your daily alotment of carbs in one shot and being zero carb the rest of the day.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #7

The fiber in the apple slows the absorption of the fructose to a rate that the liver can handle, so if you can accept that kind of carb load, go for it!

Thank you for all the information. I won’t have any apples for now!

Just eating raw apples were never much of a temptation to me. I did, however, really like my wife’s fried apples, similar to what they have at the Cracker Barrel only with some good Stayman Winesap apples. I also really liked sweet apple cider, fresh pressed, just real apples and nothing else.

The cider, I had to leave behind. I haven’t had even a sip of that since going keto. I think I’ve probably had about 1/4 of one serving of fried apples in the last 6 months. When I tasted them again, they were way too sweet for my liking and I just didn’t want any more of them. I won’t lie, I would probably eat a piece of apple pie that was sweetened with something keto friendly and in a keto friendly crust. I may even make one for a special occasion sometime this fall or winter. (I tend to do things like that when we have company so that I can have -A- piece and not have the whole pie or cake to eat between my wife and me.) Or, I might even get my wife to make me some of those fried apples for a special occasion only use a keto friendly sweetener. I’m thinking maybe Thanksgiving or Christmas.

A little apple here and there is a non-issue as far as I’m concerned, as is some other fruits, i.e., peaches, plums, cherries, that kind of thing. But they are not a part of anything regular. I can probably count the number of occasions I eat these annually on the fingers of one hand, likely having fingers left over. Every day or very often may be considerably different and I’m not wanting to go there myself. Occasional treats, yes, and I will enjoy them thoroughly when they happen. Food group, no.

I eat 2 or 3 apples per day (though no other carbs). Been in ketosis for 70 days.
