Eat late or just skip it?

#1

Hello all,
This is my first post, and I hope I can write in english well enough for you to understand what I am trying to enunciate (I am norwegian)

I am not new to keto, but I keep falling of the wagon. Now, I am back on, and have had a hard transition this time. No real issues, just heavy fatigue that is new to me. I think it might be the stress in my life at the moment. But today I feel better, and I hope that being fat adopted before will help me get going faster than when you do this for the first time. We’ll see. My plan is still doing this for life.

So, my question is; I am only eight days in, I eat real food only, got ketones in my urin, and have fealt the acetone breath a couple of times yeasterday and today. I dont have a keton meter. So thats where I am.
I don’t want to eat late at night, and I dont eat breakfast if I am not hungry (usually not). So I will have lunch (breakfast) at arround elleven, and dinner before six, seven at the latest. Sometimes, like today, I have to work late, and it is not planned. When that happens, and I don’t get home before eight to start cooking… would you eat, or just wait till the morning? I did eat tonight, as I was hungry, but was thinking it would be better for me not to. (pleas regard where I am in the prosess when answering)

If you don’t want to eat late at night, don’t eat, it’s fine. I prefer not to eat late at night either, it doesn’t agree with me. This is how many people get into fasting when they’re on keto, it just happens naturally because hunger happens less.

I think that studies generally show that our insulin response is greater at night, and that late eating messes with sleep and circadian rhythms.
I often work until about 7:30, and I’m still trying to figure this one out, but my long-term goal is no meals after 7:00.

Another option - besides skipping dinner altogether - is something relatively small like a cup of bone broth with a bit of fat in it or an avocado with some salt and lemon.

I sleep better if I don’t eat too close to going to bed. Plus, if I skip supper, I’m usually more hungry for a hearty breakfast… and I don’t mean oatmeal. (Steak & eggs, maybe!)

If you are hungry then eat. As Allie says, as you get fat adapted you’ll likely be less hungry anyway. Once that happens it will be easier to not eat later than you want to, so it’s a temporary problem.

Also, no need to worry about your English, :sunglasses:

I like this idea, nice solution.

That’s my kind of breakfast!

I struggle with this one. There’s definitely research saying if you eat late, you’re more likely to have a higher insulin response, even for the same calories (if you ate earlier). I have fasted many, many 3.5 days and at least 10 4.5-5.5 day fasts, but if I eat, I find it hard to go to bed hungry. (If I’m fasting, it’s not a problem – not sure why that is.) I tried to not eat the last few times I’ve gotten home late and ate dinner late, but was then still hungry. I ended up eating late at night. Part of the problem is we have kids that we’re trying to get to bed, and I have a hard time eating a lot of calories at once (no one meal a day for me yet). So, I’ll eat dinner, we’ll get the kids in bed…then I get or am still hungry. I haven’t figured out a way around this, other to eat more at dinner, which I haven’t been able to do.

If you are hungry you should eat. But if you feel you can skip that meal, do that. I try not to eat too late personally, but sometimes I am just hungry and so I eat late.

Your English was very good

I don’t do that every day, but it’s VERY satisfying when I do. If I know there’s a chance I won’t get another meal that day or possibly a meal of a decent quality (traveling, for instance), it’s one of my go-to breakfasts.

I vote for skipping if you can… Eating too late effects my sleep. I also think that we are so programmed to eat at certain times that we feel we should even if not terribly hungry. Sometimes at work I get weird looks when I don’t eat lunch at 12pm.

I’ve been eating late and even in the middle of the night for the past 6 years I’ve been doing keto and I’ve had great success. It has never stalled me, never caused weight gain, and hasn’t affected ketosis one bit. I should mention that I don’t eat carbs that late, just usually meat, eggs, or pork rinds. If I don’t eat late then I may wake up hungry and that itself effects my sleep big time. It’s my personal belief that eating late is only of significance when you eat a good amount of carbs.

I say if your hungry then by all means eat!!! If eating late worried you then try to keep it to a light, smaller meal. This too all depends on what time you go to bed as well. I tend to stay up pretty late so eating dinner at 7 or 8 doesn’t usually effect me negatively. It’s one of those things where you kind of just need to experiment and find what works for you!!

+1
Skip it
Skip right to bed😀

Slight bias I guess. I’m one not to ever eat late

Any who, Maybe try just some ACV concoction of some sort to calm those urges or possible false hunger pains
U can try a cup of Tea, bone broth perhaps

Your body knows best

Eat if you are truly hungry; otherwise skip it.
