Easily discouraged

(Janet Smith) #1

I’m about 6 weeks in. Messed up once on the weekend. Been back on track since then. But this week it seems I’m up 2 lbs and feel bloated. I get easily discouraged but am still staying on track. I feel I’m may not be eating enough and I have not been in ketosis in days :pensive:

Janet
Pls give us the lowdown on what you’re eating, we may be able to help.
Cheers
Alec

It honestly varys. Working midnights I find it hard to get what I probably should… when I get home from work I usually have bacon and eggs, chicken bacon tomato on romaine or egg salad on romaine. Dinner I eat chicken keto casserole or zucchini boats.

Are you drinking plenty of water? I tend to feel bloated when I don’t get enough to drink. Are you feeling hungry?

Welcome to the rest of your life! At six weeks, you’re just a baby, right? It took you your whole life to get you to where you are today, don’t beat yourself up over expectation versus reality dissonance. You’ve got the keys to good, right, and delicious living. It won’t be easy, since the highly-addictive and tempting food still surrounds all of us. This is a great community. Learn about yourself, your diet, Keto and LCHF, and fighting all the wrong teaching on food that is what the mainstream calls “common sense." Deep breaths are fantastic on Keto.

Unless your a tiger in the wild. They are naturally ketogenic. But that’s another matter.

Hi Janet,
I hear you on the discouragement, but the only thing I can say is keep on it! Trust me when I say it is so worth it. Also, throw the scale away! I don’t own a scale, the reason I don’t own a scale is because it discourages me when it tells me things I don’t like. I’m the type of person who throws myself into something fully (keto being no exception) and when the results don’t pan out the way I think they should, I get super discouraged. I therefore, made the executive decision that I wasn’t going to invest in a scale in the genesis of my ketofied journey. I go by how my body feels and how my clothes fit. Also, a more accurate portrayal of loss would be taking measurements. Often times, people will lose inches but not weight. We call these Non-Scale Victories. Everyone has their own reason for starting keto. Whether it’s because they want a better A1C or blood pressure reading. Whether it’s to have more energy or less brain fog, or whether they just simply want to look better in that little black dress. There are reasons behind the choice we made to go against the grain and embrace this way of life. Take a measure of your desicion, Janet, understand your why and determine yourself in that direction. If it was for weight loss alone, realize that you are an individual and your body chemistry responds differently than someone who seemingly lost all their weight in six weeks. Keto is a process, as is weight loss. One that is different for each person. Don’t be discouraged! Because you are increasing your health in so many different areas, even if you can’t see those results as of yet. Keep on and keto on, Janet. You won’t regret it!

Are you using a blood meter to check ketosis?

(Janet Smith) #8

Thank you all. Yes I’m drinking lots of water so I dont think it’s that. And we use the pee sticks lol

Life happens. The first few times I ate a meal “off plan” it took awhile to get back into Ketosis. About a week the first time. Maybe 4 days the second. Once I was fat adapted (about 5 months in, evidence of demonstrably severe metabolic derangement!), it happened much more quickly, within a couple of days. I had an off plan meal on my birthday about 9 months in and was back in ketosis within hours. The more you are in ketosis, the more your body adjusts to burning fat (dietary or body fat) more effectively and efficiently. So, hang in there. It gets easier/better.

You might also take comfort in the fact that you didn’t gain several pounds of fat overnight. The weight gain was likely water weight associated with your glycogen stores being replenished. Once you’re back in ketosis, this type of weight drops back off rapidly.

Also, women’s weight loss journeys on a ketogenic diet are complicated by hormone fluctuations that can cause our weight to yo-yo up and down in response.

Does anyone have tips for fasting? I work midnights so I think I would do it from 4am to 4pm

(Alec) #11

Janet
I have recently found that if I get hungry during a fast, eating some salt just removes any hunger or craving I have. YMMV. I use pink Himalayan salt. Works a treat!

If you are still getting pretty hungry I would wait, you are still a little new to be trying to IF at this moment. It really should just start to happen, if you are not ready I would not push it because I think that can make things worse to a certain extent. I was around 7 weeks when it started to happen, but not every day, once I fat adapted it became 2nd nature, I would actually try and fast when you are sleeping if that is how it works out for you. When I was 2nd shift I normally would eat at noon to 6 with main meals at noon and 6 sometimes one between.
