Early am high glucose

(Carolyn) #1

Hi! I’m a newbie. On keto about 2 weeks. Started due to high Fasting blood glucose prediabetic range. Time to fix it. I’m sure I’m insulin resistant

So, question is … after a keto dinner ( kangaroo ( yes! In Savannah Georgia!) and Veggies and 6 oz dry red wine plus 20 min walk home — my 2 hr post prandial BS was 109. Cool

However my AM FbS was 108! What’s up? Shouldn’t it fall??Looked up on line - said to eat carb snack before bed ( what??? No!!!) also said my liver could be releasing glucose due to low glucose (hmmm maybe)

I imagine my liver has some fat stored ( as you say…old Krispy Kreme’s)

Do I have to give up alcohol? Tell me no!

Is this good? Bad? Recommendations?

Thanks in advance

This is pretty common in diabetics. Yes as you sleep your blood glucose drops. Your body responds by mobilizing more glucose in the blood stream. It gets your day started. As you continue on your ketogenic plan you will see this start to get lower.

I still have dawn syndrome. I just accept it and move on.

Have you isolated a time frame length? I am trying to determine if I am experiencing the dawn syndrome or if it is something else. My readings seem elevated from as early in the morning as 4:00 am to noon but do seem to digress as the day wears on. The elevation never seems to go higher than 105 mg/dl. I am t2d.

I experience the dawn phenomonon as well. Two weeks in isnt all that long and you still have a lot of time to adapt. Just to give some perspective in the first 3 weeks I’d measure first thing in the morning over 6mmol, now into week 4 and something has shifted within amd my first morning readings have dropped a whole mmol. And now my daytime glucose is in the 4-5mmol range. Just be patient. You may be one of those who will need a little more time, especially if you’re resistant to begin with, I believe.
