So great, Katie!
Dude, stronglifts is the best program ever. Progress Pic
If you’re older, also check out Slow Burn and Body by Science. Both advocate short, intense workouts once per week. I gained 3.3 pounds of muscle in one year using these, and I’m over 50. (Data from DEXA scans.)
As a former body builder, I have too many injuries to do string lifts.
Aww thanks for alll the replies guys!
I’m glad you’re keen to try out the program.
It’s so good, there’s an app that goes along with it and it makes it so easy to use, you put the reps in and it even tells you when to rest, creates progress charts for you, it really makes a difference to a beginner!
I was so excited, I downloaded the app and did my first workout this morning.
I did start with pretty low weights, but I know the weight will progress quickly. Already looking forward to Friday!
So last night my boss who I have a total girl crush liked my transformation post on my keto instagram.
Oh my god. He has seen me in my undies
He’s so pretty but, lol.
After watching
I bought Dr McGuff’s book

and have since been using 5 of my senior center’s resistance machines once a week. I already have significant muscle gain!
BTW, Dr McGuff says he got interested in resistance training when he met an old(er) guy with big muscles who ran a gym with Nautilis Machines; I think that old guy was Dr. Vincent (Ben) Bocchicchio. Ben was also interviewed by Ivor Cummins.

Steve –
I’ve been doing my own version of Body by Science, inspired of course by McGuff, and it is certainly working for me as well both in terms of muscle and strength gains.
Highly recommend people give it a try.
That slide for what Aging looks like without the western diet … amazing - good video, thanks!!
Hahaha! My boss is married and his wife works here, she is wonderful I love her! He is just so nice to me, it’s just a crush, I told my partner, he thinks it’s funny
Heya, I don’t want to rain on a great parade here (because, clearly, you’re doing GREAT), but I’d like to quietly suggest that if other people are just starting to work out it’s probably safer to stick with 3 sets of 8-12 reps first. Going 5x5 from the start usually means that you will be using heavier weights before your tendons and ligaments are ready for them. Doing 3x12 will force you to use lighter weights. If you do that for about 1-2 months you can then switch to 5x5 (or 4 sets of 6 reps, which is what I do, which apparently focuses on hypertrophy more).
Whatever you do, working out is great and you’ve got my congrats!
I’d love to know what your feasts consist of. Since you have such amazing results I’m very interested in what you’re eating on your non-fast days.
Great progress!
Just wanted to chime in on StrongLifts. 5x5 by itself can be a great program but I’d be weary of StrongLifts. Mehdi is a self taught “powerlifter” who for years lied about being a buddy with a strength coach Glenn Pendlay. When Glenn found out about that he denied knowing Mehdi. I personally have seen posts disappearing from StrongLifts site that questioned Mehdi’s advice or legitimacy of his experience. I don’t doubt that over the years he accumulated a decent amount of knowledge but his site is now a purely commercial product and everything that questions his advice is censored. The guy simply saw a business opportunity and went for it which is admirable but his tactics aren’t ethical.
Some advice that he used to give out:
- Drink a gallon of milk every day to gain weight (for hardgainers).
- Wear flat sole shoes for squats.
#1 is wrong on many levels.
#2 I agree that flat sole shoes are great for deadlifts but lifting shoes are much better for squats. By lifting shoes I mean something that will come up when you search for “powerlift 3.1” on Amazon. That type of shoe puts your ankle at a better angle for safety and strength, particularly for heavy weights.
I like the theory behind Body by Science, but you should be careful with some of their other information. When they start calculating the amount of heat it takes the body to heat up cold water you just drank and talk about using a body fat tester (I forget the name of it) and not getting results for over a week of not lifting, I think they get a bit crazy.
These techniques have been around for a while. I used to read about Mike (and Ray) Mentzer:
I liked the ideas back then, too. Short and intense is typically better than long. Also, slower is better than quicker, in general.
