Good morning everyone,

I have my work Xmas party on Friday - I plan to have a couple of vodka sodas but as I’ve never drank alcohol in ketosis before I’m slightly concerned about my tolerance…I’m not a big drinker…does anyone have any tips? I don’t wanna get smashed, nor do I plan to drink excessively but I was wondering if there’s anyone on here who has a specific thing they eat beforehand? Should I have a keto friendly snack/meal ahead of time? I’m really strict keto so I have no intention of indulging on any foods I shouldn’t, I’d just like to have a drink and do it responsibly! :joy::joy:

Clare, I think both protein and fats slow the rate of absorption of alcohol, so keto foods will all serve, especially versus drinking on an empty stomach.

Have something with a bit of salt too - to help prevent dehydration. And drink water in between :slightly_smiling_face:

Brilliant thank you! I’ll pack a little lunch and eat that before hand! :joy:

Drink Tips???

Don’t.

Sorry, mom is and alcoholic.

Drink a lot of water before and after. Severe dehydration is the cause of most hangovers — thus the dry mouth and headaches. Also watch what you eat while you’re drinking.

Maybe have just soda every other drink. No one will know and you’ll likely not be talked about on Monday

Tip…keep in mind you are in a new tolerance level when on keto.

Just as when many people try alcohol and other drugs - they do not know the effect it will have and when it will hit (just as you do not know how keto will affect your situation).

One drink seems fine but, (especially because you are on keto) it will already be affecting your decision making and your perception of time.

The next 10 minutes might seem like an hour so - sure, why not another one?

If you do not have someone else monitor you, it is possible you might want to plan on a hangover and a pity party as you might also indulge in foods you’d normally avoid.

Keto is a great excuse to be the designated driver if you want an “out” from those issues / temptations.

good idea! I’m so nervous about getting drunk! I’m gonna pace myself, have a glass of water to hand with my vodka soda

It happens FAST and hard. I rarely drink now because of it. Also you might not find it as enjoyable as you once did…

I’ve found rich cheese is a good sponge food to eat beforehand.

Earlier this month I went out for the first time since staring keto, I’m not a regular drinker anyway so don’t have much of a tolerance but I definitely felt the alcohol (gin and soda with a slice of lime!) ‘hit’ quicker than usual, this was even after a decent sized meal! The pressure was on (from my colleagues) to keep drinking lots so I made sure I always had a drink on the go… what no one knew is that 2 out of 3 were just soda water with a slice of lime!

Hope you have a fun night!

My colleagues are the same way! I can see me doing something similar tomorrow night! Thank you, really looking forward to a night out!

That elusive gift
Can it really be bottled
Freedom from ourselves

When I first started keto I did so because it’s the one diet you can keep drinking on! I was stoked! That being said, I find that once I became fat adapted, my tolerance went way down and my hangovers got way worse! About 6 weeks ago I completely stopped drinking altogether and it’s been awesome! But if you do drink, I’d second all the other responses around being sure to eat good food beforehand and drink lots of water.
Also if you need help convincing yourself not to drink I recommend reading “The Naked Brain” it’s a life-changing book that I think drinkers and non drinkers alike should read for educational purposes.
Whatever you decide is right for you, good luck and have fun at the party! Just be prepared to be a total lightweight!

Before Keto, I drank about once a week. After Keto, I went a few months without drinking and the first time I did it went straight to my head. I had ZERO alcohol tolerance and the hangover started before I went to bed. It was horrible. The following day, I was hungry like a ravenous dog. I wanted to eat everything in sight. Probably consumed a pound of cheese and 2 cups of almonds!

I know seriously ration what i drink and have a water or two between drinks.
