Dr. Michael Greger

(Chris Young) #1

Hi, I have a friend who has recently picked up Dr. Greger’s book “How Not To Die”. Now when I tell him that fat, even saturated fat, is not only good but necessary in our diet he sort of looks at me with a “You dummy, how could you think that?” look.

Seems like his work is contrary to the Keto lifestyle or fat & meat in general.

My question is, what’s up with this Dr. Greger guy? Is he legit? Has anyone had any experience with his work?

I noticed that he graduated from Cornell with an agriculture degree… does he have an agenda?

On the top right of your screen you ought to see an icon that looks like a magnifying glass. It opens up a search box. If you type “Greger” into it you’ll find lots of hits. Likewise you can use it to search for Fuhrman, Ornish, Pritikin, Esselstyn, McDougall, Barnard, Campbell, etc.

Fortunately, before Ms. Minger went dark, she did a long critical review of How Not To Die.

There’s a lot of cherry picked stuff in there.
There’s also some well backed up advice on meat. HCAs and spoilage.

That said, HCAs can be mitigated very tastily:

Just made a bunch of ribeye chunks that were marinaded in red wine, olive oil, garlic, etc, then sous vided, then seared on high heat. I don’t have home HCA testing gear (and don’t know anyone who does), but the research suggests this is better than the restaurant single turn of a naked steak.

Actually, I rather liked that “critical review”. She tears apart things that really don’t stand up to scrutiny but is not afraid to mention things that Greger got right.

Hadn’t realized she went “dark”. Sad to hear that as she’s been quite illuminating over the papers of hers that I’ve read.

This was actually the last post on her website. The one before was about her life and troubles…

I dunno that she’s “dark” but her blog hasn’t been updated in nearly a year. And from personal experience, when you write about how you’re sorry you’ve been gone for a while, but now you’re back for reasons, you generally aren’t coming back all the way.
