Doing Carnivore

(William Benline) #1

What is a guy to eat on Carnivore & not eat too much protein?

You can eat any animal product, except honey.

Protein will most likely regulate itself after a while, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #3

Well, since most meat is only about 25% protein by weight, that means your percentage of calories will be reasonable. Remember that because fat contains many more calories per gram, equal weights of protein and fat work out to be 31% protein and 69% fat.

Also, why fear too much protein? It is almost impossible to eat enough protein to cause ammonia toxicity, and we don’t need to worry about gluconeogenesis, since it is demand-driven. And in the absence of carbohydrate, the insulin/glucagon ratio remains unchanged regardless of the amount of protein (according to Prof. Bikman, anyway). Is there any other reason to fear protein?

I thought it was the insulinogenic potential of certain amino acids in the protein that may have been the concern for a higher protein dietary intake. That being in those people seeking a low insulin stimulating diet.

It’s interesting to reflect that the insulin response may vary depending on the nutritional environment. i.e. that in the presence of a certain amount of carbohydrate, or any potential combination of nutrients that the insulin response will vary when different proteins are ingested. Thanks Paul for bringing this information via Dr. Bikman. Is there a reference? Was the testing done in a human trial?
