Does stress really affect ketosis?

(Amanda) #1

It’s been an awfully stressful week. My daughter was really sick for 4 days/nights. That being said, I’ve stopped registering ketones on the urine stick AND when I used my blood meter, it was 0.2 in the morning.
I’ve been sticking to my macros and just started swerve sugar. I was accidentally using dextrose. And this is strange, but I’m wondering if menstruating can effect levels. I’m dealing with that this week as well.

Anyone want to chip in their 2 cents to the stress and/or menses messing or kicking you out of ketosis?

I’m feeling disheartened. :pensive:

Stress causes cortisol to raise, which can definately affect weight loss and can even cause weight gain. I’m not sure how it specifically affect ketone levels though.

And yes, monthly cycles can totally screw with everything.

Oh, and all artificial sweetners have been shown to raise insulin levels in somebody people.

You may want to try a week of eliminating it altogether and see what happens. You might be one of those people.

Yes, but I was registering when using them and now all of a sudden I’m not. That’s why i’m wondering if it’s the stress or period. Ty

I was wondering the same thing. I have been popping in and out of ketosis for the last several days, though eating well and carbs way below 20 grams. I have been keto since February and never had this problem, but have been under a lot of stress the last few days and can’t seem to stay in ketosis.

Are you using a blood monitor? How low are you going? I find the stress connection interesting.

Yes, I do-ketomojo. I sometimes drop out completely “Lo” on monitor and other times .2, even when waking up (never has been that low at that time). Sometimes it gets up to normal for me (.7-1.2) but I can’t maintain it. It’s odd.

I start out really low, peak around noon (usually 0.8) then drop to 0.4 by evening. A lot of people say ketone levels peak at midnight (asleep then, not measuring.) Every few weeks I have a spike. Wish I had an answer, but I can’t even control my ketone levels. Would like to get higher.
