Does magnesium negatively affect cardiovascular health

Hey guys,

My parents have decided to go full-on keto after years of attempting to fix a range of heart issues.
My dad had his first heart attack at age 50, which is now about 17 years ago. He’s gone through having some arterial blockage reversal and getting stints, to having more blockage, trying statins for a while, then having some scary episodes of transient global amnesia in the last couple years, and living in fear of developing dementia like his mother and her mother did. His mother just died at age 97, but having declined cognitively since my grandfather died in 2000.

He told me recently he’s afraid of overdosing on magnesium because he’d read it can make heart disease worse. I told him I’d never heard that, ever, but had heard it about calcium, and more recently about high dose D3 if it’s not paired with K2.

So, I’m wondering if anyone can address magnesium’s possible long term side effects here. Is he missing out if he doesn’t up his magnesium intake? I suspect that’s a greater danger in his case, but I’d like some backup.

Thanks!

It’s possible to take in too much magnesium. But most people are deficient so it’s probably not that common.

I’m curious how much he’s taking?

Loose bowels, low BP, and irregular heartbeat are possible signs of too much. But those things can happen for a lot of other reasons, too.

My PCP measures my levels. I don’t take it every day.

I don’t think he’s taking more than 350mg per day, and I suggested he switch to time release Magnesium Chloride, like Mag64 to stop any diarrhea issues.

He could also try using mag oil (mag cloride flakes devolved in water) which absorbs through the skin instead of going through the gut (so none of the negative bowl issues common with mag supplements)
I would think it would be pretty hard to overdose that way as the body simply absorbes what it needs

I’m curious about Mg too, causing palpitations and/or arrhythmia.
I’ve had it lately, even though taking right amounts of Potass, Mg and Salt and Calcium, and also D3 and K2.
Starting day 1 of strict Keto today, so will see how it goes. (I also cut out Colagen thinking that may have been causing my palpitations)
