DNA Testing and diet

(Ryan Tuttle) #1

So i had my DNA tested and i found out a bunch of cool stuff. One of the things i found was that im homozygous for a gene that is associated with High levels of a certain enzyme called COMT. Basically it breakes down certain chemicals like dopamine and adrenaline faster than normal.

Some of the stuff ive been reading seems to be suggesting a keto-ish diet to counter balance its effect but it also seems like im finding limited info on my particular variant.

Its just interesting because im attracted to a modified keto diet specifically for the improved mind state.

Has anyone else read about keto and COMT or the “warrior gene”. Although it seems the term warrior gene can refer to different things.

Not yet but im very interested. My main goal with my keto journey is to address inflammation and anxiety and depression (possibly due to inflammation) not sure what you used for testing but I got a good deal on 23andme on black Friday. Still waiting for results so i can dig deeper, but would be interested in adding to genetic discussion

Just found this. I’m going to listen today while i wait for the new dudes cast. It looks like it’s related to what you’re talking about but I will let you know

I used 23 and me which i bought on black friday as well!!! Haha. I exported my raw data and uploaded to promethease.

Promethease is a good report. You can take it a step further with selfdecode.com, they ask for a subscription but you can cancel after the report is generated. The report will provide a more detailed analysis and will make recommendations on suppliments to augment your DNA expression.

Plenty of research available on the warrior gene markers, chances are that you don’t have the extreme expression.

I also did mine through 23andme, it was fast and their ancestry type of reports are good, they are aggressively working with the FDA to publish more health related reports.

COMT is a broad expression, with your description you are probably very empathic. Removing sugars from the diet of an empathic is probably a very good thing for balancing mood and gaining some command and control on emotions.

Thanks for the tips. I was planning on Prometheus but wasn’t aware of selfdecode

I had my DNA sequenced as I was wanting to explore the warrior gene, the adventure continues as studies are now published frequently.

On the promethease report you can select upon any medicine, disease or chemical that has been studied and published to date. It provides a statistical factor of risk as a study is bounced against your DNA, just have to take it with a grain of salt as few studies are all encompassing and might be a small and potentially targeted sampling on the population.

For myself I flipped open the topic of “personality” and found some very accurate representations based upon my DNA.

Having your DNA sequenced can be as simple as reading your ancestry as reported at that moment by the provider, or as deep as you want to go following the depths of studies,

One common factor in the providers databases is a significant lack of Native American DNA, I suspect the tribes don’t want their heritage questioned. Esscentually, your heritage is a statistical representation based upon the known DNA that is in their database, so over time your heritage might drift by very small percentages.

In the US, the FDA considers almost any health related report upon your DNA as a conversation between you and a licensed doctor - hence many companies have gone off-shore to provide you with the in depth health report beyond your hair color.

My selfdecode report was 60 pages of recommendations. I sat down and highlighted the most frequently recommended suppliments and proceeded to line the kitchen counter with bottles of chemicals.

Some were hits, some were just bad for me.

In the end I keep a Super Omega 3 and B based Methyl Guard.

Obviously, your results may vary. Have fun exploring!
