So I do incorporate some IF along with keto, typically from dinner till 1 or2 pm. I drink saltwater during this fast. Sometimes though I have tried a 24 hr fast, from dinner to dinner and at 4 or so I start feeling bad- like I’m coming down with something…I take this to mean that I need to eat. So I do but don’t really feel better until the next morning after I’ve slept. Any idea why this is happening? I would love to do a 2 or 3 day fast but my body seems to not really like it…been strict keto since January.
Difficulty fasting?
See @richard’s blog post here:
It may be that you aren’t able to make use of enough energy from your own body. Something worth considering.
You could eat when you feel bad and then try to extend your fast by an hour each time. It gets easier over time, but it sucks at first.
are you taking in magnesium and potassium too?
you could also need more salt…like so much that you think you are going to od.
last night i actually drank straight out of the pickle jar and liked it (wth? i never ever thought i’d do that) on top of my salt and other electrolytes i’d been having throughout the day.
i’ve also been having 1T of ACV with salt, cayenne, and water twice a day. (just in case? lol)
i was just poking around and it could also be detoxification. everything i found (keep in mind it is the internet LOL) stated
a)yes you can have cold/flu symptoms from detoxification caused by fasting
b)animals refuse food when sick to starve the toxins
at about 27 hours i felt like i was coming down with something so i just had more saltwater and went to bed earlier than normal…woke up at 2am with a left nostril playing the part of a water hose.
I woke up totally refreshed despite the annoying interruption in sleep.
i kept going…at around 40 hours i was so hyper i was almost (or totally) annoying myself…still had the random runny nose, congestion, and sneezing (has been worse at night) but i feel better than fine in every other aspect.
for me fasting is super mental…at first you have to fight “it’s time to eat” or “i feel funky, i should eat” or “i should really eat before XYZ” thoughts…with “nah, i’m fasting for health”
i’ve read repeatedly that you have to build up your “fasting muscle”
I agree with @Magoodoggy with extending the fast by an hour each time or whatever increment you are comfortable with.
also, exercise while fasting is amazing and a great tool…
for me if my stomach is rumbling and i am active i’m over the hunger/funkiness almost immediately…even if it’s just playing with the puppies.
are you taking in enough prior to the fast? #feastmode
the calculator in the link that @devhammer posted says that i don’t need any extra fat while fasting (128lb with a guessed 25% bf, metabolic rate of 600kcal) but i still do some fats in my coffee/broth about 12 hours apart.
last night i was sort of set on breaking my fast before work but decided to see how i felt when i woke up…i still have the nasal business going on to a lesser extent but am very alert and not hungry so i may keep going and let what i believe to be detox finish up
i apologize for the length or if it’s rambly
TL:DR - you can do it, just may need more tweaking
