Did you throw out your toaster?

#41

I eat a lot of frozen veggies and since I don’t have a stove I’d be eating some very cold veggies, haha. So, a microwave it is. But it does see it’s fair share of cold coffee!

I need to buy an electric skillet…

I used to make a mean sourdough loaf…but alas, nothing since going on keto. I’m hoping to give mine to a foodbank/charity place. Would be good if someone got use of it.

@weedrea I don’t know where you live but I usually just put stuff out on the sidewalk and it disappears :cowboy_hat_face:

#44

Let me just give you my address…

Oh wait, I forgot this thread was about toasters. I got fixated on the sourdough bread!

(Deborah ) #45

I love my toaster over. Haven’t had a toaster in years and years. I use the toaster oven to (among many other things) toast slices of keto bread. Delish!

#46

Aren’t there studies that show that the pancreas can start producing insulin just at the thought of eating? Or maybe it was the actual smelling of food. Either way, unfair!

Aha! Look what google found:

Editing again to add that one of the google results said that, in Islam, if you deliberately inhale the smell of food cooking while fasting then you have to make up the fasting day. That’s pretty darn strict. Sorry, just found that interesting.

#47

Oh my goodness…does that mean we should stay away from food unless we’re ready to eat? I often prep for meals I don’t eat until much later…

#48

Seems like it wouldn’t even be safe in a grocery store.

So the next question is - how much does insulin rise? Enough to derail a fast? I’m so glad I live alone and don’t have to cook for anybody or smell them cooking/eating.

#49

Ohhhh man. The smell of toast. The last hospital I worked at provided the breakroom with bread, bagels, jam and peanut butter. Everyone there pretty much made toast on every break. Nearly killed me in the first few weeks keto. I started bringing cream cheese pancakes folded twice and popping them in the toaster. And then I stopped being hungry in between meals  Suck it, raisin bagels!

I love my toaster, I just don’t have much of a use for it any more. The family comes home from time to time and then it gets some attention.

(Carl Keller) #51

I keep a stick of butter out at room temperature and my toaster is what it sits atop.

(Deborah ) #52

Me, too! Hate dealing with rock hard butter straight out of the fridge.

(Carl Keller) #53

Ironically, I got into this habit so I could spread butter easily on toast. I can’t honestly think of a good reason I still need it at room temp… I only use it to sautee vegetables or to grease a pan so I can fry some eggs. :man_shrugging:

#54

My son’s girlfriend was appalled that we kept butter out at room temp. Grossed her out. Interestingly enough, no one died.

It also means don’t cook foods that take hours in the kitchen, watch the food channel or even vaguely think about food unless you’re ready to gobble it up!:doughnut::pizza::cheese::bacon::bacon::egg::grapes::apple::peach::mango::mango::kiwi_fruit::mango::eggplant::pineapple::tangerine::corn::bagel::cucumber::tomato::avocado::avocado::sweet_potato::fries::hamburger::hamburger::bacon::cut_of_meat::taco::stuffed_flatbread::fries::fries::fries::shallow_pan_of_food::canned_food::bento::dumpling::fried_shrimp::fortune_cookie::moon_cake::icecream::pie::rice::dango::cupcake::shaved_ice::fortune_cookie::ice_cream::cake::cake::birthday::cake::lollipop::custard::chocolate_bar::lollipop::crazy_face::disappointed:

Sorry about that friends…:cowboy_hat_face:

(Full Metal KETO AF) #56

Exactly why it stays in my fridge now. I really have no need for immediate room temperature butter since I don’t make toasted bread on a whim anymore. I use a ton more bacon grease than butter since I went keto, and that stays out in a jar 24/7

:cowboy_hat_face:

#57

Is it bad to refrigerate bacon grease or just unnecessary? Just recently is the first time I’ve ever saved it and used it for cooking :fried_egg:

(Deborah ) #58

I always buy salted butter, which keeps much longer at room temp than unsalted.

(Deborah ) #59

I use it for keto toast or pancakes, and the rare occasion when I cook veggies to go with my usual meat at dinner. I only keep 1 stick out, the rest stays in the fridge, and I only buy salted butter, which keeps longer.

(Deborah ) #60

I have no idea if it’s bad to refrigerate bacon grease, but I don’t refrigerate mine. It sits in a glass jar by the stove, ready to use. :+1:
