Diabetic Type 1

Hi Everyone! I just completed my 5th week Keto. Just to let you know I’m 5’1 and weigh 135 lbs and 36 years old . I’d like to lose at least 20 lbs. I’m diabetic type 1 and have pcos. I’ve only lost one 2 lbs so far and I’ve been super strict with my macros. I’m really frustrated and contemplating just going back to pasta if the difference is only 1kg. Or at least eating more veggies to be honest I miss the veggies the most. No difference in inches either but on the other hand my skin is awesome! Can anyone help me please?

I was extremely frustrated as well I lost a bit in the beginning but then nothing for weeks and weeks. I read someone’s post the other day saying how successful she was doing Omad and also tracking her macros I haven’t tracked anything since starting. I tried doing this a few days ago and I already dropped 4 pounds finally so maybe if your not tracking that could help also . If you post some meals I’m sure everyone will help if there is anything you could change I’m not to much help since I am still fairly new and learning more and more stuff still .

I dont have time to really get creative mostly eggs - beef - cheese (not processed) - I even make my own salad dressings and mayo- avocado - I’ll have a bowl of spinach or a head of brocolli a day - cauliflower rice sometimes - and once in a while a tomato and some macadamia nuts or sunflower seeds.
I keep my net carbs under 20. I keep my protein between 40-55 grams and the rest is just fat.

Twice my blood sugar went low and I ate some dark chocolate 80%. Im trying to work out but i’m not religious about it for instance last week i did 6 hours and this week I was like really tired and lazy so didnt go. My ketones are always high … maybe too high like the darkest purple but my sugar is relatively ok.

should i cut out the cheese or veggies?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

How much insulin are you taking? A ketogenic diet should lower your blood sugar enough that you can dispense with the pre-meal doses, and just have the daily, slow-release dose. Check out Dr. Troy Stapleton’s experience in this presentation:

and you might also want to check out the Type I Grit site and perhaps even join their Facebook group.

Hi, I’m T1D (for 45 years). Don’t worry you’re still in the early stages.

You have both T1D and PCOS. Healing from within is the biggest priority for your body  You don’t have huge amounts of weight to lose(only just in the overweight area for BMI)so it will be much slower anyway plus your medical conditions.

If you’re sticking to under 20 carbs/day you should have already needed to reduce your bolus insulin to reduce hypos. However, in the absence of carbs you do need bolus insulin for protein, but at about 50% of normal carb requirement.
I reduced basal insulin by only 4 units/day but now bolus is at approx. 80-90% reduction.

You may still have high insulin resistance, and your body is healing internally prior to the less important weight loss side effect. Please be patient. At almost 6 months of eating the keto way I’ve lost 26.5lbs but 3-4 dress sizes. Slowly but surely. When I was five weeks in I’d lost only 4lbs in weight but inches had dropped and I was seeing dramatic lowering of BGs plus mental stimulation. I reached fat adaption at about 6 weeks . Wow, what a difference that makes and believe me you have something to look forward to!

I have found that root ginger supplement has really helped with cortisol and insulin resistance. I take 2 capsules twice daily. Recommended by @SlowBurnMary who is extremely knowledgeable and I urge you to read her posts on root ginger capsules. Both T1Ds and T2Ds can benefit from her wisdom.

Most importantly keep your electrolytes balanced ie sodium, magnesium and potassium, eat fat to satiety, moderate protein (to reduce insulin insulin requirement; so don’t follow the non diabetic recommendation in the early stages) and max of 20g of carbs.

Drink loads of water! Eat high fat first thing in the morning to prevent BGs rising further. For breakfast I drink coffee with double cream (I’m UK based) plus I eat 4 teaspoons of cream cheese. For me, this works to prevent BGs rising ie liver dump (to use the everyday non medical terminology). I don’t like breakfast so this works for me. N=1 so you may be different and scrambled eggs/ bacon etc may be your answer???

At this point in time I do get high FBGs due to the Dawn Phenomenon but this is normal and I don’t concern myself.

Wishing you lots of luck and success with your journey and new way of life. Feel free to message me if you want to ask any other T1D related queries. Ali

Thanks for the video! My fast acting insulin has dropped drastically, I’ve been diabetic since I was one and to be honest I dont really monitor very closely. But I noticed my blood sugar does still get high if I eat just fat its not just protein although not as high as I thought it would. I’m worried about cutting out dairy because if cut down protein and vegetable AND dairy what do I eat just cocunut oil? I love food I wouldnt be able to sustain that kind of lifestyle.
