There are so many ways bioimpedance can give faulty readings I wouldn’t even start to list them. My Dexascan has me at 15.7% my scale at home has me aty 27%BF So I wouldn’t give it the time of day. Also my scale estimates 3.1 pounds of BMC ( bone mineral content) the DXA? 7.2!!
The same test is done for osteoporosis but they will need the software to double check BF…start here
Also – Doesn’t cardio increase insulin?–You sound like all his is making you stressed too–Reducing stress is so important. Maybe weight training and mild cardio – like brisk walking for a bit
My theory is that these impedance meters don’t actually do what they say they do and just use standard %s vs weight for an individual. Looking at my data I just think the numbers are too stable relative to each other to be real-time readings. Real-time data is rarely stable.

I too have a similar issue. I work out everyday 2-3 hours - tennis at high intensity. I am starting to gain weight rather than lose and I have about 15 more pounds to lose. I typically consume 1200-1600 calories per day before subtracting my energy expended during my workout which can be between 300-600 calories. So I am most likely not eating enough which is why I cannot lose any more fat and my body wants to gain. I am down regulating my metabolism.
It has been very hot where I live and I have been consuming 120 oz of water during my workouts with 3 tsp pink salt and 6 scoops of electrolyte powder. I also noticed that when I drink ultima electrolyte powder - 6 scoops I am bumped out of ketosis. Could the sweetener be doing it? I am going to just add lemon and salt to my water for now and see if that makes a difference. Even though I am supplementing my electrolyes I am exhausted after my workouts and need a rest. I wonder if I am not consuming enough salt given the heat right now. I just had an annual blood draw and awaiting results. Interested to see if I am low in potassium - even though I eat an avocado every day and take a multi vitamin.
Thank you for the videos on reverse dieting and undulation. I am going to try undulating my calories and try to increase up to 2500 calories and see if this helps release some body fat.
FWIW I am a post menopausal woman - 52. I started keto in February, was fat adapted until about mid June when I went on vacation. I feel as though I am fighting to become fat adapted again. I do not believe I am fat adapted right now due to my extreme exhaustion in the afternoons. Taking a lot longer this time. Again could this be due to the sweetener in my electrolytes - keeping me out of ketosis.
Great thread. Will post back results in a few weeks of undulation.
Your healthier than most people on the planet despite no weight loss (a side benefit)!
If you are open to new ideas and tired going around in circles.
Try thinking about it like this:
If the weight is not coming off long-term and your doing everything correctly, it (no weight loss) is a symptom of another health problem, so your body is locking itself into survival mode and holding onto the fat for dear life and until that health problem is fixed whether it would be a variety of inter-twined variables like hormonal ratios, meal frequency, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, gut flora biome ratios or what have you?
The health problem will be a brick wall until you find out precisely what is going on from clues in blood labs to eating frequency or fasting too much, then carbing out because your giving up?
Something is going on somewhere and focusing on the ‘weight loss goal’ should be secondary to the primary concern ‘how do I fix the health problems that caused it or is causing it right now to begin with?’
I would buckle down on the science first and at least try my hardest to get a firm grip on what the health problem actually is, then try to make my goals ‘health first,’ ‘weight loss later?’
What I know about science says this is due to insulin resistance setting your set-weight too high.
Keto is great but it doesn’t lower insulin enough (because proteins do rise insulin) to lower IR. Fast is the best way to lower IR. But you say, I eat in a 16:8 window. That is not really enough. You need at least 24h. So either do alternate day fasting, 24h, 36h or 42h, or if you prefer fast 3 days a week (3 days is quite a magic number as a lot of beneficial things activate). And that will address insulin resistance. And when you don’t fast, you need to feast, so you shake it all up a bit. Still keto or low carb of course.
I agree that all that biking can backfire. First because it’s stressful, and cortisol raises insulin. Secondly because you’re giving your body a valid reason why it should keep its reserves of fat. It knows it needs them, every day you go biking!
So that’s just all theoretical and direct experience sometimes doesn’t go the way theories go. But I would give a solid try to fast, given that it wasn’t even difficult for you.
Yes, the sweetener could be doing it if it raises your insulin level, because too much insulin inhibits the production of ketones.
I cut down on ultima electrolytes which contain sweetener. My ketones in the morning only register 0.6-0.8. I would expect them to be higher, but perhaps not.
Also I am now wondering this… I typically take my multi-vitamins right before I go to bed. Could this habit bump me out of ketosis?
In addition, last week I went for hydrostatic water testing and RMR. I spoke with the nutritionist and explained that I am tired and not losing weight considering how active I am. First thing out of his mouth was for me to try “reverse dieting” and to increase my protein intake and carb up for exercise (he is anti keto, I could tell). I seem to not be eating enough and have screwed up my metabolism.
The past week I have been working on increasing how much food I eat in hopes of resetting my metabolism. I did my first 24 hour fast Friday and that did move the scale down 0.5 pound.
Fasted cardio is overrated.
But slowed cardio, on the other hand, . . . .
(Okay, okay! I’ll show myself out . . . )
Yeah, my guy also says I need to eat more… and he’s paleo guy so not quite keto but higher carb.
I did get confirmation from the doctor on Monday that I definitely have hashimotos… and my research says that a diet giving up eggs and dairy (as well as gluten, sugar etc) might help. So I’m trying that at the moment…
Yes, have still found stuff to eat, surprisingly. Although giving up nightshades when my homegrown tomatoes are just ripe is a bit of a bitch…! Hah!
But I’ll give it a go… and also try some more fasting and less cycling. It’s waaaay to hot in Spain to cycle at the moment anyway. And the lost tourists in cars present that extra challenge and raised stress levels!
