Dayquil

(S Smith) #1

So I’m new to Keto (as in this is gonna be my second week) I’ve been really strict about my carbs and other macros. However I am sick with cold (sore throat, can feel mucus in my chest etc), and have to work so I chugged a bit of dayquil as I normally used too. However I took my nightly urine test and I barely had trace amounts and am assuming I took way too many carbs in not knowing that liquid syrup had carbs.

Any Idea how long it will take to recover and go to ketosis? I’m 6’1 204lbs, I ate 17g net carbs and probably had 45 ml of Dayquil over the course of the day. Very annoyed as I didn’t even think about checking it for carbs.

Firstly a lot of people will advise against using urine tests to measure ketones due to their inaccuracy and unreliability. So that’s something to consider.

The 45mls of Dayquil works out to about 27g of carbs, add that to your 17g from food and it’s only 44g. Yes, it’s higher than the recommended 20g daily, but some people manage on keto <50g so I wouldn’t call this a complete blowout.

A day or two you’ll be back in ketosis most likely.

Thanks! As I said I just started so haven’t gotten my blood tester yet. I wanted to try it a while and see if I could maintain since i’m coming from a diet that consisted of utter crap. (2 Mellow Yellows, Starbucks Venti Carmel Macchiatto, 2 bags peanut butter mnms share size, pizza, etc on the daily).

Thanks again!

I’m sure a lot of people here (myself included) can relate to those old eating habits.

Rest easy knowing whatever small hiccup you may have going over 20g of carbs a day while on keto, it’s minuscule compared to the huge carb count of your old SAD diet.

All the best!

try checking ketones in the am before eating, if not any ketones, just skip a meal, works for me.

Sounds like my old breakfast…

Dayquil has pills too. they should have less carbs than the liquid. Just finished my cold and it didn’t upset my diet.

Should be back in within a day or so. Don’t worry about the pee strips, they lie and steal your money.

Cough medicines don’t actually treat the illness, so you’re aware, it’s simply masking symptoms. Also they taste horrible and contain sugar…

Mucinex is the brand name of cough syrup in pill form. The basic formula is guaifenesin, which is an expectorant, and just as with syrups, you can get it with dextromethorphan added for suppressing the cough. I haven’t actually looked, but I imagine the pills contain less carbohydrate than the syrup form; they certainly don’t contain alcohol!

There are generic-brand Mucinex tablets that cost a
hell
of a lot less and do just as good a job.

Also remember keto is not a quick fix, which means there will inevitably be bumps along the road. The pill cough suppressants are a good idea, but if the liquid lets you work and you don’t have the pills, that’s fine. Do what you need to do to get thru the day and don’t beat yourself up.

If you check at a natural foods store there may be some herbal options that are lower in carb. (Not the syrups, they are likely just as high carb as conventional medicines.)
