Dangers of twilight btw low-carb/keto?

(Keta) #1

Having been in ketosis for the first time recently but then being kicked out early, I wonder what the more medium-term goal of this might be. I fear that I may be living in the twilight between low-carb and keto, and transitioning in and out, regularly. So, in other words, no “fat adaption”. Some here on the forum say that this is dangerous, it can harm metabolism. This is sth I have also heard from elsewhere. Others do not seem too concerned.
Is there any data on this / experiences / wisdom of the forum?
Thanks!

Can’t say whether it’s bad for you long-term or not as I don’t know, but it certainly makes you feel like crap…

Is there a reason you don’t do full keto? The problem I could potentially see is having high ketones and insulin at the same time. Insulin blocks ketone uptake and prompts fat storage. So, you’re never getting the keto benefit.

This is why it’s known as low carb purgatory - you get the bad effects of carb withdrawal but miss out on the good effects of keto.

Depends on what you mean by “being kicked out” of ketosis. A lot of people find that their ketone measurements drop after a while, and what that generally means is simply that they’ve gotten more efficient at using the ketones they generate. If you mean, on the other hand, that your levels have dropped because you’ve gone back to eating carbohydrate in quantity, then this of course does not apply.

Apparently this happened to Dr. Adam Nally for many years. He does not say anything about it harming his metabolism, instead that he felt much beetter after being in ketosis.

I wonder if this is where I am. IF since March 2017, LCHF sine April 2017, stalled since December. Lost 35 lbs quickly but still need to lose 50 at least. I lose during a fast and use keto to maintain the loss. Stopped fasting, lost interest and stopped the weight loss but have not gained. One fast in January that did not cause weight loss that stayed around. Long fast last week for some reason want to fast again that was great until Day 3 and then ended up as torture. Made me wonder if I was in ketosis. The cheap breathylzer I had showed nothing the first few days and finally on Day 4 showed .3 and same on Day 5. I felt great through Day 3 and then did not. This week I am doing a couple of short fasts 40 hours. Seems much easier.
