Hi,
I just started on Keto and I am confused, a book I am reading says I can have dairy, but a friend told me I need to stay off of dairy for at least 1 1/2 months, which is correct?
Dairy for newbie
Heavy whipping cream has no carbs. Milk, skim or low fat milk has carbs so I would avoid those at all times
I find the opposite true for me. Dairy has a lot of good sources of fat that make meals more interesting and help converting to fat burning easier. It wasn’t until months later, when my body was proficient with using fat for fuel, that I reduced my dairy (but not completely).
Unless you have an intolerance to dairy, low carb dairy can be an ally.
I have gone overboard on dairy from day one, and I’m losing fat at a decent rate. I wish people would spend the first month (at least) with only 2 things in mind: 1) carbs are bad; 2) fat is good. There’s a lot more to keto, but making things complicated from the start can be discouraging. Worry about the details later.
Honestly this all comes down to genetics. I have no issues with dairy. If you’re descended from Northern Europeans, East Africans, or any other group that has historically consumed dairy, you’ll probably be fine, tho you still can’t drink regular milk due to the number of carbs.
You have to find what works for you. If you get the results you want with dairy in your diet then go with it, if not then try removing it. We are all different.
You are already giving up carbs, if you’re a person who likes butter, cheese, cream, sour cream or plain full fat Greek yoghurt then have at it. Just read the labels and account for incidental carbs.
I’ve used heavy whipping cream from day 1 (in coffee and in meal prep). I don’t want to waste my carbs on milk so I avoid it. Just mind your carbs and if it isn’t causing distress enjoy it!
