Curious about skirret - Brits?

(Candy Lind) #1

Have any of you in UK ever had a root veg called skirret? I’m reading an historical novel that mentions a skirret pie and read references that compare it to parsnips. I’m wondering if this is really antiquated - and also if it’s keto friendly or not! :sunglasses:

Not likely too keto.

Now, I looked at this article, but missed the word “Umbelliferae” - which would have clued me in that is indeed in the same realm as parsnips & carrots. So not completely out of bounds keto-wise, just a “don’t go overboard with ‘em” kind of thing. :sunglasses:

looks interesting but I must admit I’d never heard of it… no idea how to get nutritional info though!

Funny how that made you less confused. It made me more confused.

A what? Errr…

At one point in my life I was quite the amateur botanist. There is a native plant in central Texas that is closely related to the carrot. They are both in this taxonomic family, which also includes cumin, parsley, coriander/cilantro, dill, caraway, fennel, parsnip, celery, and anise. Umbelliferae were so named because their flower clusters look like little umbrellas or parasols. Think Queen Anne’s Lace (also a close cousin).
