Any tips for dealing with cravings, or maybe any easy snack recipes?
Cravings
First, be sure to eat enough fat with your meals. That will help. In a few weeks your satiety signaling will kick in, and that will help. Fat-adaptation generally follows a few weeks after that, and that also helps.
If you are hungry between meals, eat fat: buttered cheese, bacon, pepperoni, high-fat nuts (if you can avoid bingeing on them), whole-milk yoghurt with some heavy cream on top, that sort of thing. And then try to eat more fat at meals so that you can go between meals without getting hungry. (We stress fat because it’s calorie-dense and doesn’t stimulate insulin production.)
If you are craving sugary/sweet things, try a pinch or two of salt. That can help. Also, I find it psychologically helpful to avoid making a commitment never to eat sugar or other deadly carbs ever again. Instead I tell myself that I can always have some tomorrow, but just for now, I’ll wait. It mitigates the sense of deprivation and helps me outlast the craving. Even the worst sugar addict in the world can go 24 hours without a hit.
Some people find that artificial sweeteners help with the cravings, others that they make the cravings worse. Not only that, but every artificial sweetener seems to give at least a few people insulin spikes, and practically everyone seems to react that way to at least one artificial sweetener (going by posts on these forums, at any rate), so you’ll have to do some experimenting to see what does or doesn’t work for you.
Good luck, and whatever happens KCKO (keep calm and keto on)!
