CRAVING rice and veggies!

#1

I have no idea why but I have an overwhelming and almost over-powering urge for a big bowl of rice and vegetables! Strange thing is, that’s not something I regularly ate before going keto, have never been a huge fan of rice or veggies, but today that’s all I want.

So far I’m fighting it but I have to wonder if my body is trying to tell me something. As you all know, our bodies are very good at telling us what we need - we just aren’t so great at hearing them or listening to them. I wonder if since I’m having a colitis flare that that’s what my body needs, rather than a fatty, meaty meal. I just looked up both white rice and brown rice and they each have 45 grams of carbs. Thinking maybe I should give in, half half a cup, and add only low-carb veggies and LOTS of olive oil and butter.

Can’t figure out any other reason why this strange craving except that my body is trying to tell me something… but what?

Your Body and Mind has lied to you for years why would you trust them now :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

The problem isn’t listening to your Body and Mind but knowing when its lying to you

Awwwww, that’s not true… I’ve found over the years that the body almost always knows what it needs - I was just too stubborn to listen to it. I’m thinking it has something to do with the stomach issues I’m having now.

What kind of seasoning do you usually eat with rice and veggies? You may be craving that and not the actual rice/veg. Would a cauliflower rice/veggie bowl with coconut aminos hit the spot?

#5

Susan, I agree with you. I’ve always done well by listening to my body. I can’t explain why your body is craving it, but I don’t need to understand why to obey a request.

FYI, a few low carb health care practitioners have talked about cases where their clients had weight loss stalls that were resolved by a carb up. I dunno the science, all I care about are results.

Hi there.
The few times I’ve eaten rice and veggies all I added was olive oil and salt.

Cauliflower rice would not work right now because of the colitis flare - that would be like putting sandpaper through my intestinal tract. I think I’m going to give in with just half a cup of brown rice, green beans, and broccoli with butter and olive oil. The only thing I’ve had today are scrambled eggs and bacon so I can pretty much afford the carbs. Just find it so strange, but then again the body is a very complicated thing, and the mind? Even MORE complicated!

Maybe check your glucose levels before, after and then and an hour or two after to see how rice affects your blood glucose levels. I know cold rice has resistant starch that is good for your microbiome.

I can do that, and I definitely will, but not sure why?

Seems to me if your having problems with Colitis is rice or fibrous veggies going to help

Thanks for that. I agree with most of what he said but have issue with a few points. When people with my type of colitis are in a flare they are pretty much told to eat nothing but white rice and chicken until things calm down a little. I had food sensitivity testing done and unfortunately I react to chicken so I try not to eat much of it. I agree that veggies probably aren’t a good idea but if they are over-cooked it doesn’t create many problems. I have tons of bone broth so will go sip on that for a while.

That’s why this craving is so strange - my stomach is a wreck and it is asking for rice and veggies. All I know for sure is that the thought of meat right now almost makes me vomit.

I am trying very hard to get through this flare without going back on steroids because I HATE THEM, but if I can’t get it under control soon with a bland diet, I may have no choice. Thanks for the video.

My concern is the rice will swell up

How about soft veggie soup?

Let me help you out susan

Rice will swell up? What’s wrong with that?

Thanks for the recipe but cauliflower is something that I can barely eat when I’m not flaring, let alone when I am. :frowning:

Eh, just accept it’s a craving, it’s not forever. It’s the sugar addiction deep down trying to drag you back into it’s sticky clutches so it can dig its sticky claws in.

One would think if you have problems with inflammation (colitis) the last thing you would want is anything swelling and bloating?

here is one cup of rice alone?
Image result for 1 cup of rice

now thats eqaul too eating 45g of carbs or in other words 45g of pure table sugar

or eqaul too drinking a fanta or eating 8 packets of smarties

still craving?

Ahh, ok - I see your point. But rice is one of the only safe foods for a colitis flare (not sure why, but it is… bland I guess) and seems to help people heal. All I know is right now I have to do whatever I can to heal my gut and if it knocks me out of ketosis for a day or two, so be it.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I agree go ahead just dont make rice a habit (:

#19

Trust me, it won’t become a habit … I hate the way rice and pasta leaves me starving 30 minutes after eating it and I hate the sugar spikes and crashes I used to get. But the colitis is pretty much disabling and I have to try to heal that any way I can, short of starting the steroids again, or I will need to take some short term disability for a while if I let it get too bad.

Just throwing it out there that table sugar and rice are NOT the same thing. They have a different effect on the body. It’s like saying that butter and margarine are both good/bad because they are fat.

Still wouldn’t recommend eating it… but I think overwhelming generalizations are dangerous

Edit: actually I think if it could potentially be good for your gut, an occasional indulgence wouldn’t hurt
