So I’ve already lost 70 pounds low carbing. I want to lose an additional 18. Im a 46 year old female in peri menopause. Lately im considering carnivore to help me lose this last bit. I love the low carb lifestyle! Interestingly, I’ve been craving fatty meat everyday and could eat it no problem every meal. Why would this be? I wake up everyday wanting a ribeye or a fatty pork steak! Never experienced this before. My only concern is that being a woman, would it be bad for my hormones? Ive heard conflicting things. I have some autoimmune issues and food intolerances so i already know i feel best on a limited diet but i also feel a little wonky already due to peri menopause. I would like to hear from women, especially of my age. How has carnivore helped? Im already carnivore for two meals a day with some carbs at supper. Easing into it.
Craving meat
@Ilana_Rose and @April_Harkness might be able to offer you great advice and guidance on this, as they are both Carvnivore Keto women =).
Congrats on your 70 pounds loss so far, and welcome to the forum =)).
Yes it’s great for your hormones but it’s not a weight loss diet, many times people coming from keto have been restricting their protein severely and when you start eating ad libitum on carnivore which is the only way to do it, your body will grab onto that protein and rebuild some of the muscle mass that you’ve lost on keto. I lost 50 lb on keto over 2 years and gained 8 lb my first month carnivore, however that weight came off after 8 months and along with it two full sizes in my pants and 3 in. from my waist. carnivore is a healing way of eating but if you’re so successful on keto and you don’t need to be carnivore don’t do it for weight loss.
This young women had extreme auto-immune disease and healed it with a meat only diet. So extreme she had a hip and ankle replacement as a teenager.
Both her parents are now carnivore. She is worth a listen. She is smart and seems to keep adjusting her opinions as she gains more data.
Just a little side note try to find meat with no antibiotics, hormone free, grain fed if you do decide to go strict carnivore.
Posted on March 5, 2018 by Mikhaila …I try to buy antibiotic/hormone free grass-fed beef as much as I can. … just eat more meat even if it’s grain fed with antibiotics, than to not eat more meat. …More
She says now she is eating chuck roasts like steak because it is far cheaper and almost as good. I eat a lot of chuck myself mostly as ground beef.
Ribeyes are still good.
3lb steak, reverse sear
I second this…it is fascinating and so hopeful to hear her story. My own thyroid disease has been reversing since going Ketogenic.
Hi Joanne!
Congrat’s on the 70 pound loss! WOW!!!
I’m a 52 yo woman, peri-menopause- only for a month now, and feeling fabulous doing my carnivore and coffee routine now. I noticed the hormone mayhem at the beginning of Keto- when I lost lots of weight and inches, but the fat that was coming off was releasing some wicked hormonal soup in my system. My cycles were AWFUL. I did a couple 5 day fasts, went full carnivore, then did a 7 day fast, and here we are. On full carnivore, I haven’t felt this good since I was in my early 20’s. After 5 knee operations, lower back problems, cluster headaches, high BP, and all over aches and pain, fatigue and brain fog…I feel like a new person. I have none of those issues anymore. I’ve lost around 50 pounds, and wow. Am so excited to get rid of the next 40!!! The plan is to continue the carnivore/coffee routine, add in more IF and EF, and relax.
So, maybe just try carnivore for a week and see how it goes? Ribeyes with a side of butter (dipping sauce) - are my fav. Drink your water, get some electrolytes, and enjoy the freedom from dealing with other foods. Meat is wonderful!!!
Rebecca,
Congratulations. In your case meat does heal.
Her story is what helped me more than anything else, actually. She brings almost no science; but she brings a conviction that comes from a miraculous seeming remission of an incurable horrific lifelong degenerative condition paired with a reasonable question: "If you’re really sick, then what do you have to lose from a month long carnivore test?
I had three horrible pain conditions develop in my 40’s. Constant migraines and trigeminal neuralgia, both deemed incurable, and an abdominal pain condition that remained undiagnosed though I saw a half dozen different specialists. In the end my gp just told me sometimes abdominal pain is never diagnosed.
I was on narcotics and two other drugs to control all the pain. Keto helped enough for me to wean off the narcotics, which was great because it got me out of the drugged stupor. However, I still had all the conditions, though the migraines became less frequent and abdominal pain somewhat less severe.
Mikhaila’s recommendation still sounded really extreme and I was a vegetable lover. It took me six months of mulling to finally commit to a decent trial. Within two weeks I was able to drop a second drug. After a month I was able to begin tapering the last pain drug.
I’m now entirely in remission from all three conditions. Even better, based on my experiences when I fall off the wagon for a few days here and there, I suspect at least two of them may actually be healing as opposed to merely non-symptomatic while I’m adhering to strict carnivore, although I cannot be certain since I keep my time off carnivore very short. And when I do stray I always return to a very strict beef, salt and water protocol (+1 coffee with a bit of cream which I still need to try removing) until I feel 100% great again, after which I open up a bit of room for other meats, seafood and fish.
I normally love to have a ton of evidence for everything but somehow she delivers her message in just the perfect way to make a really ill person say “Seriously, what the **** have I got to lose in trying this?”.
In the end, it’s not even that hard. Meat is delicious and constant pain sucks and ruins your life. What a choice.
I’m 52 and also in peri-menopause and suffering autoimmune issues. Carnivore helped a huge amount with the autoimmune problems, much more than standard keto.
But when I was strict keto I enjoyed complete remission of my hot flashes, which previously had been awful. When I started carnivore they came back with a vengeance along with a few other minor health issues that had been very much improved on the ketogenic diet.
In the end I figured out that the problem was that my fat to protein ratio had become too low (the lower 70% range). I don’t know if it was some issue with having too much protein, or too little fat, or specifically my level of ketosis (which had indeed dropped off).
When I dropped my protein back down to about 60 grams and brought my fats back up to about 120 grams all of those keto “wins” returned and I still had remission of all my other health issues.

Take a look
Good Luck😄
age 58 now and did my menapause thru extreme low carb time/zero carb eating and I can say basically…what menapause Had a few night sweats and bit of mood change, but not much. I sailed thru easily. I have no idea when it kinda started and when it was over. I was very balanced thru it all. I am lucky on all this, just me and my body but I also put it directly to my eating plan and how it helped me thru it all.
