Cramps in the back

(Casey Crisler) #1

There’s a lot of threads here about cramping but they seem to be for leg or stomach cramps. I get a cramp in the lower right side of my back. It’s been happening every time I walk lately. I usually just work through the pain until it goes away (which it does sometimes). I understand lack of potassium and salt, etc is probably the reason but I was just curious if anyone else is experiencing this type of cramp? I’m not 100% sure if it’s really even a cramp and not just a sore muscle. I’ve started tracking my electrolyte intake to see if that helps the problem. Either that or drink pickle juice (which my lady friend said gets rid of cramps).

I’m no expert, but back cramps seem more muscle related, so could be much like the muscle spasm people get in the their calves. And as you already know, potassium is remedy in such cases.

Unless you actually pulled something.

Let us know how it goes.

Could this be a kidney issue. While I have never experienced it I know people who have and say that before passing a stone they would have bad back pains.
Might be something to not rule out.:pensive:

It probably is more of a muscle issue. I’ve had back problems for 30+ years. It’s just in a location I don’t recall ever being affected before.

Ugh I hope not. I had a CT scan done Friday and a uro appt next month for an unrelated test. I will have to ask about that.

My back muscles used to cramp every time I stretched. I had to get a prescription potassium to get enough. Not saying that is your issue but it helped me.

Somewhat related🤔

I was getting mid-left back pain
Almost like a hot spot feeling, tingling
It was frustrating!
This happened when I was walking
THEN, I narrowed it down to TOO MUCH caffeine
NOOOOO!!!:rage:
I drink a lot of caffeine
Already giving up carbs n sugar. Not caffeine completely . Nope
Drawing the red Line somewhere on this WOE

maybe it was a ymmv
I have no science charts, no infographs, no tests, no trial studies
JUst my .02 cents :joy:

But, I did reduce my intake.
It helped!

Interesting. I sure hope not. I wouldn’t survive the day without my shot of morning feen! As it is, I’ve already cut back to just 2 cups of coffee in the early morning. None after 10am (maybe decaf here and there). I’m hoping to start Orange Theory HIIT workout this afternoon and see if I get any back pain. I’m eating a couple of tuna sandwiches (oopsie bread) for lunch to see if the little bit of potassium helps.

I had some back pain in the exact spot you describe when I first started Keto. Definitely muscle spasm and was eased a little by getting it worked on by my Physio and with some take-home exercises. What really helped was upping my green leafy veg - Kale, Spinach etc, so I suspect a little of a Potassium deficiency. I also started using lo-salt (50/50 sodium & potassium) and I have not had a recurrence since. Your pain may of course be related to something completely different, but I’d certainly be making sure I’m getting enough greens.

I have similar pain. Its when im cycling over 30 miles I will get side cramps whereas I never would get them while I was a carb burner & riding much longer rides say 80-100 miles. I am trying to understand the salt & electrolyte thing.

Look up ketoaide in the forums. It might help some. I started drinking it to see what happens.
