Although this article focuses on a high protein diet, it’s typical of mainstream media’s perception of all low carb diets. Consumer Reports is a trusted brand and their recommendations carry a lot of weight. How does the ketogenic diet differentiate itself from the glut of low carb diets that don’t get people to keto adaptation, and how does the community counter claims of renal damage and the diet affecting brain function?
CR: "Risks of consuming too much protein"
Ok, I agree that this consumer report article is complete rubbish, and spewing out data without citing sources. However, did you see the comments below? Holy crap. It’s mutiny! So many testimonials of how LCHF saved their lives and was the only thing that worked for them.
Agreed! I saw this paragraph in the article and thought “really!?!” It is unbelievable how ignorant some doctors are.
People lose weight on high-protein plans because they take in fewer calories, not because they focus on protein. “Diets only work by lowering calories,” says David Seres, M.D., director of medical nutrition at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York and a member of Consumer Reports’ medical advisory board. “Where the calories come from doesn’t matter.”
From another article:
Short of up to date teaching many doctors fall back on myths and misconceptions about obesity. Many believe obesity is caused by too many calories and not enough exercise.
That’s awesome, thanks for pointing it out. No, I hadn’t paid attention to the comments, but good for them.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire. RD’s are not any more enlightened than doctors. I had one tell me I needed to eat crackers, instead of nuts for a snack because of the fat content.
