Could our BMR be the issue? We've been stalled for about 2 months

Hello there!

Me and my partner started kept 9/11/17. I’ve done it before (on and off since 2012).

We’ve been chugging along nicely as the numbers show, but about 6-8 weeks ago we hit a stop point. We’ve been fluctuating by 5 pounds up, 5 pounds down ever since, despite KCKO and making several adjustments. My partner has continued to occasionally lose inches, but recently she’s put a couple back on as well (which I’m pretty sure is bloating but take that for what it is). I’ve lost a spare inch somewhere along the way but mostly stayed put.

After learning a bit more about calories and BMR, I was looking back over the last 8 months, and I wonder if we’ve accidentally lowered our BMR. We’ve been eating around 1400-1600 calories despite being relatively active individuals, and I am wondering if we’ve simply lowered our BMR unintentionally. Some days we’ll get up to 2000-2200, but the vast majority of the last 8 months has been 1400-1600, sometimes lower. We usually eat one meal a day, sometimes between 9pm and 11pm (the only time we are both home), the timing of which is another thing we have considered changing. We’ve discussed moving out OMAD to breakfast. We haven’t actively tried to lower calories, but 1400-1600 is what we ended up feeling comfortable eating in one meal.

We don’t do keto treats and our carb counts are definitely not the issue here. I enjoy Diet Coke, Mio in my water, and a drop or two of Sucralose in my coffee, but other than that we don’t really have artificial sweeteners in our life. Once every couple months we’ve enjoyed some sushi or another higher carb meal, but it’s never lasted more than a day, and the stall hasn’t coincided with any of those days. We do consume a decent amount of cheese, but we always have. Not sure if that matters.

Our current thought is to officially embark on a fasting adventure extending past our typical 20 hours, and FEAST to raise BMR in between. What are your thoughts? Have we missed something? Does this sound like a decent strategy? What about moving our OMAD to breakfast instead of late at night?

Feel free to ask for clarification if something here doesn’t make sense. But I’d love some people’s feedback. We’ve just been kicking the can back and forth with each other and we need somebody else to “weigh in”, if you will forgive the bad pun.

I don’t have any advice because I literally just started this a few weeks ago. However, just wanted to say how awesome it is to read that despite stalls or plateaus you are both sticking with it and trying to find a solution. Congrats on your progress so far. That’s amazing.

Well extended fasting over 36 hrs. is what got rid of my final 15 lbs. after a long stall.

Try eating only breakfast, some people do well because it fits their circadian rhythm better. I have a vegan friend who has had great success doing just that, she has a big breakfast & a snack just before 4PM, She is at a weight she hasn’t seen since she was in the 7th grade. And she sleeps better too. Try it for a week or so and see how it goes.

BMR could certainly be the culprit. It could also just be a stall. To follow Megan Ramos’ advice, might be time to mix it up.
I spent the last 3 months actively trying to ramp up my BMR. I fasted and FEASTED, ratio of 1:2 and really really tried to feast like it was going out of style. While I stayed put weight wise, lost over 4” pant size. Feel juiced all the time. I didn’t have it measured but mos definitely think the BMR got repaired. I probably ate 2500-3000 Val’s on feasting days (M, 5’8”, 217). Evidence - on early fasts my beard wouldn’t grow. On my current fast, day 3, no slowdown in beard growth…
I can highly recommend doing some fast feast cycling!!

Absolutely. Come for the weight loss, stay for the health benefits.

I tapped out last time when I hit a stall, and I wish I had stuck with it. Having my fiancé do it with me has made all the difference this time around. Also helps she’s an amazing cook! Thanks for such a kind message. Good luck!

I’m thinking I probably have about 20-30 pounds left…partner has a little more. I’m thinking the extended fasting AND moving the one meal to the morning will be an interesting way to go.

Mixing it up is definitely the plan. Gotta keep the metabolism guessing. On those feasting days, did you eat several meals or just one big one?

I just ate whenever hungry, and after satiety ate a little more - for an excess of a couple hundred calories. So, yes, I consciously overate, but just a little. Lotsa macadamia nuts, pork rinds, cheese, salami and liverwurst
I think it worked wonders for me.
