Cooking while fasting

(Joanna Parszyk ) #1

Hey guys.
I’m looking for some advice for the times when l’m planning to fast but l have to cook ( either for other family members or for guests). The food might be keto or not. Usually l know my ways around the kitchen but sometimes the taste test is needed. Any tricks?
It is not easy sometimes especially when l’m trying to ignore the hunger wave.
Thanks!

You can put food in your mouth but you don’t have to swallow it. As a sous chef, fasting and taste testing often collide and I doubt anything of substance will make it to my digestive system. I totally understand the weakness of having to smell all that goodness and not being able to indulge but it makes avoiding carbs outside of work very easy to do. Seeing a cookie is not as trying as smelling it bake.

If we can’t do this:

We must lean on our willpower. Good luck to you.

Just ask someone you trust for their opinion. I’m lactose intolerant but my husband isn’t. I make him stuff I really cant have like cream based sauces he loves. I make it then ask him to taste test and ask him if it needs more salt pepper, garlic, etc. Be warned though- husbands aren’t the best for this because they are unspecific. Usually the answer is “Its good!” haha. If its just for him whatever but if its for guests, ask a woman.

I make my partner test everything as he will be the one eating it, lol.

Thanks guys for all the replies.
My better half is not around when l’m cooking.
I guess l can always apply the “ wine tasting technique”.
I used th have a bad habit of munching on whatever l was preparing, constant grazing style.
Now l’m trying to sip on black coffee to prevent that.
Usually works but sometimes when l’m very stressed bad habits come back :unamused:

Making breakfast for my little one was challenging at first… Frying up an egg first thing in the morning when I plan to fast daily to lunch.

But now? I’ve got a much better feel on my seasoning method in general and I notice seasoning also go is much more even way than all at the end. It’s likely not perfectly how I would like it but then again I’m not the one eating it:)

Good luck I think it gets easier and using a trusted taste tester is my way!

Never considered the wine tasting method I might give that a try!

That’s a tough one! I ended up breaking my fast a few hours early cooking TG dinner because I’ve never cooked and not tasted it to check for seasoning.

I am sensitive to the smell of food so cooking while fasting would be hard for me. My favorite thread when fasting is the food porn one because looking at pictures of food doesn’t bother me.

I am smoking a turkey breast on my back deck and fasting so at some point may regret it when it starts to smell good.

Interesting. I cannot look at food at all when fasting. So, I avoid a lot of the recipe-type websites and even television ads.
