I looked at her website at “What is Paleo?” and I thought, “WHAT? Wait, I could plug-in ‘keto’ for the word ‘paleo’ and it describes what I’m eating, except that I limit my carb intake!” The only thing I can guess is that it’s cutting into her earnings. These similar healthy WOEs should be standing shoulder to shoulder to affect change, not fighting and back-stabbing!
Confused and disheartening
She really did get sick,as do many of us who have autoimmune flares.
I would hope that we can agree to disagree with some of the Paleo experts. This is why we as a group of Paleo, low-carb, keto have a hard time being believed in the mainstream is that we fight each other all the time, IMO
Robb Wolf and Mark Sisson told us to chilllax in the 2015 Paleo conference and speak our truth but don’t get to married to any one thing because as we age we might need to use those tools.
Both of those experts encouraged us to keep an open mind, and get a better market share so that we could show up on even footing with vegans and vegetarians.
Maybe she would earn less criticism if she stated honestly that it just wasn’t for her and didn’t suit her body, rather than making it a full on attack on everything keto? I don’t know her, never heard of her, just seems wording things differently could’ve been a good move.
Agreed. That podcast came off as there are all the “sciences” of why keto is going to kill you, rather than why keto didn’t work for me. The latter would make an interesting listen and material for further study. The former sounded like she is just green eyed.
It sounds like this Ballentine doesn’t actually know what we eat. Eliminating carbs, which are almost by definition empty calories, and replacing them with fat should have zero impact on your nutrients. If you’re doing it right, you should be eating more whole foods than ever, including plenty of green stuff… not nasty processed wheat that is so nutritionally empty that it has to be fortified to prevent health issues.
Not everyone is going to jump on the keto train together, but the science is on our side. It’s a matter of time and corruption, now.
Sadly, she does. She’s known as the “Paleo Mom” she was one of the big names when Paleo was in it’s full blown cultish taking over the world phase, she’s got books, cookbooks, her blog, and tons of other stuff. Paleo leveling off and Keto getting more popular every day is very bad for her wallet, that’s all it’s about. At least Mark Sisson was smart enough to do a bad job at pretending he was a keto fan while trying to walk the line to sell products to keto’rs while not loosing his Paleo crowd. Not her! She friggen HATES Keto! Which makes me enjoy it more for some reason
Keto has put my autoimmune diseases into remission. I have psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, exercise-induced asthma and previously alopecia. I also had hashimotos but my thyroid stopped working a long time ago, so that’s not in remission.
Just before my last small flare, my CRP was in the 40s and ESR in the 30s. At that point I switched to Humira and Methotrexate which kept both in the 20s. 6 months into keto and both were 8, thyroid dose down, weight down 30kg.
I read The Paleo Approach a few years ago but it was too restrictive for me to try. I like her theory on how autoimmune disease start in the gut but thought her review of keto was rubbish.
That is so encouraging to hear that you are doing much better on keto. I have also read the paleo approach and it’s really what got me started on looking at my diet as a way to heal. I just don’t see that there is a lot of difference in the keto v Paleo food. I just think a good scientist should be more open to looking at new research and not be so damning of other peoples choices. Hope you keep improving. I will be getting my results on Monday to see if I have time to save my thyroid. Fingers crossed.
I too am looking for some guidance on this new journey… I have been using My Fitness Pal to track everything I put into my mouth, I honestly have not cheated once. I started this new lifestyle the 2nd week of December… I keep reading about ppl losing 5-10lbs at a time… well I have only dropped 10lbs since I started and was wondering what I’m doing wrong. I am using the ketone sticks and I am always in ketosis. I am going to be 53 this month, I do take Vfinity products , I use the Ketoperk for my bullet proof coffee, and the V3original capsules… any and all suggestions would be much appreciated, Thank you
I have listened to a whole bunch of podcasts myself. 2 Keto Dudes is great because they back it up with facts, and the fact is, meat and fat provide a lot of nutrition. The human body is designed to eat meat and fat. For 99.999% of human history this is the way we have eaten. Fruits and vegetables were really only eaten in summer and so our bodies can adapt to different diets because our bodies are smart.
Sure, if you eat only bacon and eggs every single day you’ll eventually end up with a nutritional deficit. But contrary to popular belief, we eat a lot more than just bacon and eggs!! We eat healthy oils and fats, meat and fish, nuts, leafy green vegetables, avocados, etc and etc.
On a another note, humans cannot digest the cell walls of plant based foods very well because we don’t have multiple stomaches or chew cud. We can’t graze on grass or browse on weeds because we aren’t grazers or browsers like sheep and goats. We are also not chimps or rats, either, so science based on their dietary needs needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Just my two cents.
Not familiar with that podcast, but I have been immersed in the science behind keto benefits for over two months and following a keto way of eating since January 1 (down 11 lbs! ).
The Dude’s podcast has led me to many excellent doctors and journalists making the case for keto - Gary Taubes, Nina Teicholz, Jason Fung, Phinney & Volek - also see Mark Hyman at the highly regarded Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. Hyman is a bit sales-y for me, but his science and clinical practice experience is strong. Strongly recommend that you turn to the great literature of the last decade to keep learning and determining if keto is for you.
Totally get your doubt attack - we’ve had so much bad advice, which has led many of us to mistrust ourselves and the dietary advice we get. My advice? Stick with podcasters who stick to the science and provide access to progressive doctors and researchers who continue to inform the discourse about beating metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Then compare what you learn to your own experience.
Keep the faith - there is a way to get to your goals! Wishing you the best, and a strong journey to your best health!
The first real paleo diet I saw, years ago, marketed to consumers, was presented as the strictest form of Protein Power Life Plan. PPLP has you keep your carbs down in the keto level, your protein to what your lean body mass and activity level suggest, and fill the rest with fat. At the strictest, it was paleo, with that 5% carb, 20-30% protein, Fat to fill the rest.
To me, that is paleo. It is keto. That’s what Cordain would say, it’s what O’day would say, it’s what the Eades would say, likely Volek would say, and I’m out of the literature for 10 years now, but Taubes would agree and cite whoever is new on the scene investigating what folks ate in the neolithic and before.
Thank you all for your considered responses. I have found it very encouraging that people are doing what feels right for their bodies. I am feeling great doing Keto. As I said previously I love researching things and in my researching, I found this http://ketotalk.com/?s=23&submit=Search. I hope its ok to post this link here. It’s a podcast I came across, probably not new to many of you, that goes through every one of Sarah’s criticisms of the keto diet. It certainly was a very interesting listen. Thank you again for the support. KCKO!
You’re not doing anything obviously wrong. You are female, over 50, and losing about a pound each week. That simply is great. While some may lose that ‘5-10 at a time’, from what I’ve seen, slower loss is more the norm than those lucky people who do lose it fast. Also, those who lose it fast are more likely to report their successes than those of us who go at what seems a snail’s pace.
