Confused about Dairy

I am trying to figure out if I have a food sensitivity to dairy. I get confused with all of the information out there. Does dairy include the heavy whipping creams and cheeses? Or does it mean milk, ice cream (not eating that anyway) etc? If I want to cut out dairy, I assume that means cut out cream, cream cheese, sour cream and cheese…and butter. Cutting butter would be very hard for me.

Thanks for any advice.

Paleo doesn’t do dairy because they don’t think cave men milked cows. I love dairy products and live in an area rich with them (Minnesota) so that turned me off to Paleo from the beginning.

Primal is pretty much Paleo + Dairy.
Banting is pro dairy as long as we tolerate it.

Milk can be high carb (lactose). If you drink milk, Banting recommends whole milk or half n half or heavy cream. Stay away from skim or 2%. More carbs per unit volume!
Cream cheese, sour cream, butter and cheese are all fantastic for you, great sources of fat & protein and DELICIOUS. Whole milk yogurt (unsweetened) fits in there too.

IMHO, the only reason to give up dairy is if you are in some way intolerant (ie if it causes you gastric distress or inflammation). I’m from northern european decent so I tolerate it very well. People from other parts of the world may not tolerate milk it at all…

Dairy means milk and its products from animals. Milk, cream, cheese, butter, buttermilk, cottage cheese, yogurt, kefir, sour cream, cream cheese, creme fraiche, mascarpone, ricotta, whey and casein protein powders, and all derivatives of products from milk. There’s cow, goat, sheep, camel dairy that’s regularly available. Cutting out dairy means all of the above.

As to whether it’s ok varies, some tolerate it and others don’t, some tolerate certain dairy and not other dairy, some tolerate it in certain quantities, some tolerate goat but not sheep.

Thank you. I don’t think I’m intolerant to dairy, been eating it my whole life. I was going to experiment and cut it out while I’m doing Keto. The reason is I wanted to see if it bloats me up…but I don’t really think I’m intolerant to it. I do eat heavy cream, sour cream, cream cheese and other low carb cheeses. I never go skim or low fat anything dairy. I also love butter. I felt if I cut that all out what would I have to cook with or snack on? Thanks for the info. All of this I eat in smallish amounts. I don’t snack on cheese all day. I have 2 string cheeses a day and maybe some shredded cheese in my recipes. I’ve been doing Keto for 5 weeks and just trying to see what works and what doesn’t. I lost 6 lbs the first 2 weeks and since really nothing on the scale. However I do think my body is changing shape. Not fitting into smaller clothes yet…I am also doing IF 16:8. I am in ketosis judging by my blood ketones and pee stix. So I shall Keep Calm and Keto On

I agree, sounds like there’s nothing to really troubleshoot. KCKO
