Confused about cottage cheese

(Erin ) #1

I’m confused with the different fat percentages and if this is ok to eat. I hate avacados so I’ve been eating tons of cottage cheese but I don’t know if there is a specific type I should be eating. I noticed here at work I’ve been eating the only type they have which is 2% milkfat . It says 2.5g fat but it has 5 sugars! And 7 carbs. Does it all have this many sugars?

Is there a specific type I should be eating?

You need to look at the specific package and see what the nutritional panel says the fats, proteins and carbs amounts are for that product. I would aim for full fat cottage cheese if possible but check the package. You may also wish to look as cream cheese, marscarpone or sour cream to go with dishes as these likely have more fat and less carbs. 7 carbs is not great if you are eating a lot of it.

Also, where are you located? Knowing an area or country could help with giving specific recommendations that are available to you.

I’m in Miami

2% is pretty low fat for cottage cheese. I typically see 4% and a “small curd” variety that is even higher fat %.

Fat phobia is in full effect in our cottage cheese sections in MN. One thing I’ve done a couple times lately is adding shredded Muenster to fortify my small curd. It’s awesome

:joy: cottage cheese fat phobia is real life

That’s why I’m so confused, I don’t think I’ve ever seen full fat cottage cheese!

Or yogurt even!

Cottage cheese is higher in carbs regardless of type.
Have real cheese like Jarlsberg

You might have better luck finding full fat ricotta cheese. And I think a way nicer option than cottage cheese - very creamy tasting - but will still have a carb count. Dairy of any sort can be tricky for keto - so same advice, read the labels, and see how it works for you in your overall meal planning. Your body will let you know.

Interesting! Had never thought of that. Thanks!

I have given up on finding a cottage cheese or yogurt I will eat. I won’t eat anything with more than 2 carbs a serving.

I occasionally buy the zero fat greek yogurt and add in MCT oil and stir!

Just to satisfy my curiosity: why not whole-milk Greek yoghurt? And still add the MCT oil!

(Teresa (turtle)) #12

I would do that but I can’t find whole milk Greek yogurt!

I am beginning to suspect a conspiracy! My local supermarket has stopped carrying liver and other fatty meats, pork rinds, any flours but wheat and corn, and when they have heavy cream it’s only in pints, not even quarts. I guess I’m lucky they still order in a few whole-milk yoghurts.

I’d eat the Greek style, but the way the brand I like makes it, it’s a bit too sour/bitter for my taste. There is a brand that makes Greek yoghurt that I do like, but that brand lacks the live cultures that my preferred brand has.

Full fat yogurt and cottage cheese are easy to make. You can add HWC to make them even fattier.

It’s the same in the Untied Kingdom, asking for a full fat yoghurt in a supermarket is like asking for one of those magazines on the top shelf in the brown paper wrapping…
However, here in France, it’s not nearly as bad. Most of the dairy is real full fat, but I hate to say it, the amount of low fat rubbish is on the increase. But you can still get jars of goose fat and packets of beef or pork fat in the supermarkets. And any butcher you ask is delighted to find someone who actually wants fatty cuts of meat…much cheaper, and tastier too.

Love it! You interested in taking in a boarder? :grinning:

Cottage cheese is definitely too low fat on keto, even the full fat one. I buy sour cream or creme fraiche which have about 35% fat.

Just as an idea, I make yogurt at home from coconut cream. There are many recipes on the web.

I don’t eat much cottage cheese but when I do I get full fat cottage cheese and mix half heavy cream and half cottage cheese, makes real good cottage cheese.

(Erin ) #19

Man I’m going to have to start ordering things online or just try and make my own stuff!!!

Can’t find anything at stores. I could try the ricotta I suppose but idk about eating that plain :expressionless:

There must be a way to find more fat in dairy-ish products.

I don’t know how else to get my fats. I’m going to oRder some
Mct oil but for now only have coconut oil

Good luck! If you do find a way be sure to let us know. I’ve been lo-carb for a number of years before Keto and I finally had to break down and learn how to make my own yogurt, and a few cheeses etc. It’s a learning curve (but not difficult) and well worth the effort for the quality in the end result. Give it a try!
