Hello,
I am a 16 year old boy who is in his 7th week of keto. I am not doing keto for weight loss (I am of a healthy weight). The issue is my energy level. I used to work out 3 times a week, walks etc. However, ever since starting keto my energy levels went down. And I did my research, I know that it takes 6-8 weeks to get somewhere, I track all my electrolytes, eat salt, drink water, never went over 20 net carbs, raised my calories,… Now is there anything I could be missing that could help me get more energy (I get over 500mg magnesium, 5g sodium, 4g potassium, supplementing vit d and b) because I told my family my energy would go up once I am about 6 weeks into keto, which at this point already is. Should I just KCKO and wait until I get my energy back ?

If you have no weight to lose you should be approaching keto as maintenance. Try reading those threads. I would suggest you may be under consuming fats if you consistently are feeling low energy, because fat IS your energy sorce on keto and apparently you don’t have enough body fat to smooth things out if you don’t get enough in your diet. Most people in maintenance eat more fat than the ones who are trying to lose weight.
I am getting around 120g of fat a day which to me sounds reasonable for someone like myself (16yo/44kg/158cm)
I’m only suggesting to add a bit more when you’re feeling low energy, go by how you feel instead of a number that a calculator puts out that probably didn’t really include a young man your age that has no extra body fat to spare when they developed the program, which is based on averages.
You probably have a healthy metabolism at your age. You need to start listening to your body’s signals at this point in your keto journey. At this point you aren’t experiencing any sugar related hunger signals. You may be eating till you’re comfortably full but changing to a higher fat macro may fix your energy issues since protein and carbs are fairly negligible energy wise. Carbs being too low and protein an inefficient source of energy. That’s why carbs are not necessary at all with keto. Protein is necessary for building blocks. It can’t hurt anything trying it for a week to see if it helps.

Thanks troy, I just got back from Ketocon this weekend!
Hi @GekeBepe, I am 17 years old and have been doing keto for 3 years now!
Could you restate your question about keto?, trust me, I actually enjoy reading clinical studies on the ketogenic diet and researching everything down to the atomic level of ketosis.
Heya,
So my question is whether my energy levels will come back (it’s been almost 7 weeks since starting) or if I might be missing something despite having electrolytes, water and vitamins in check.
It’s kinda hard to make my family believe in keto when I am tired all the time
I need to know more about the factors that could lead to your “low energy levels”?
check your DM’s
To some extent, this is to be expected, but you will probably be feeling your energy level start increasing soon, as your muscles reach fat-adaptation. We enter ketosis almost immediately after cutting carbohydrate, but it takes a while for the muscles to “remember” how to metabolize fat, and they need to heal and to start producing certain enzymes again. Normally, the process takes six to eight weeks, though it can take longer to reach full fat-adaptation.
A more important issue for someone your age is that you should be ignoring the protein recommendations you see on these forums. At 16, your body is growing and developing, and it needs all the protein it can get. Be sure to get enough. Your brain is also growing and developing, and it needs plenty of fat to do so. So don’t stint on the protein and fat, and eat until you are satisfied. If you are eating enough, your parents will be complaining that you are eating them out of house and home.
Actually, I think you should ignore the protein recommendations given on these forums regardless of your age. Protein is not your enemy. I’ve tried higher fat and higher protein, and eat the latter, not the former. If you have a reasonable glucose, insulin, and glucagon metabolism, protein does not affect your blood sugar levels.
This isn’t to say I never eat higher fat, just that I’ve shifted to mainly eating lower fat. I eat ham instead of salami for instance. I rarely eat bacon and dislike other fatty meats. I rarely eat guacamole, avocados, etc. I don’t put butter on my steak. I don’t eat fat bombs. I don’t drink oils or butter or any fat other than a minor amount of cream. I do still eat cheese at times. Cheese = high in K2.
I want to commend you for following up and seeking more information.
Alright, I am doing about 85 grams of protein a day. I am not quite sure if it’s a lot or not Thanks for the insight !
Personally I would go with 2g. Protein per kilogram of lean body mass, which basically sounds like what you actually weigh. I just looked at a macro calculator and at your age and size maintenance levels for fat with moderate activity was 136g. and if you want to gain a bit of weight you can go up to 156g. Not that you should do this exactly but these targets might be more appropriate for you. I eat about this much and I’m sixty and not overweight. Still loosing weight slowly with macros of (<20g.C/150g.P/120g.F) But if I were in maintenance I would add more fat, I still have a good 10-15 lbs. to go so I eat less fat to stimulate burning my own body fat. Most days these figures vary significantly but over time this is the average. So I track for analysis and records, not as a strict guide.
I have a 24 year old autistic son who’s pretty lean and underweight (about 6cm taller than you and a kg. over your weight). I got him on keto several months ago and he’s putting on weight slowly but not fat. It’s muscle and bone. I feed him as much protein and fat as he’ll eat, which is about 75-80% of what I eat. He has MCT and HWC in his hot drinks everyday. He’s not hungry constantly anymore and does well on 2-3 meals per day, if he wants the rare snack I let him have some meat, walnuts or pork cracklings/rinds. I want him eating as much as he wants.
