Collagen, anyone try it and have stomach issues?

(Denise) #1

My neighbor-lady gave me one of 5 containers (new, unopened) of Dr. Axe’s Collagen powder. I’ve been taking half a scoop (whole recommended) in my coffee each morning for about a week.

Yesterday, after I ate my normal Keto breakfast I had a bad tummy ache, cramping so I used a couple of my home-remedies for that, but really felt like I might have a bug (stomach flu, I don’t know). I got a lot of relief from a hot-water bottle, ACV, then later, I tried 3 drops of my Peppermint extract which really helped. But I woke up in the middle of the night with cramping again. That calmed down again after a few minutes using nothing to fix it.

I’m not using in collagen this a.m. since I need to see if I feel bad again today. It’s only when I’ve eaten something it’s like my stomach is has some sort of bug so I am not sure at all if it’s that one tsp of collagen in the a.m. or flu maybe.

The lady that gave it to me bought 5 jugs of it, but then had to give them away because her doctor told her not to use it. I just don’t feel a conventional medicine-doctor suggestions are always right, for me anyway  So I have to experiment:grin:

I will have to see how today goes but wondering if anyone else has tried collagen powder?

Hey don’t know whether it’s that that is bothering you or something else but I’ve been using collagen powder daily for 3+ years and never had a problem. Hope you work it out.

I’ve been taking collagen powder for well over a year. I started because I was experiencing hair loss and was grasping at every straw. After a few months, it improved. Of course, it might have improved with no intervention at all. BUT… There is a noticeable improvement in my nails, my skin, age spots, toenails, etc etc etc. so I still take although at half dose for maintenance.

I never experienced any tummy issues. But that doesn’t mean it’s not the case for you. Or it could be coincidental. Good luck, Denise!

For almost a year, I have been having a tablespoon of hydroligized collagen powder in my coffee each morning (2 cups of coffee-two Tbs. collagen/day). I have been taking it due to my significant and ongoing hair loss. I don’t know if it’s working for that, however, I don’t have any ill effects or stomach upset from taking it.

Good luck.

What benefits have you seen Amanda? I ask because so many articles, including studies from PubMed, talk about some true benefits like improvements of hair and skin. I do know there is no fountain of youth, but I look at different things that can help me get enough of what my body needs.

I eat very good, including lots red meats often, fish, chicken, and pork. I do have a side dish of brocoli or cauliflower, my faves, and eggs, sausage, cheese, fruits (blackberries, strawberries, blueberries). I do a tsp each of chia seeds, flaxseed and nutritional yeast.

That is all wonderful Robin! I do eat very well, but I wondered after 2 years if I might benefit from extra collagen. Mine is mainly Hydrolized bovine hide collagen peptides but I am new to my reading up on the different types.

I am so hoping it is not the collage causing the stomach thing. I’ve been out a lot, even in the heavy rains we are having, been around the elderly (that don’t take care of themselves and are sick a lot) so I could have caught a bug even with all I do to stay healthy.

Thanks Marianne, I am starting to think it’s not the collagen at all. I think I let my immune system down when I went almost 2 months with no gym-work/exercise. I was going to move and with the holidays I just did my keto (strict about that) but neglected the exercise, blaming it on the weather, but I just got lazy.

Sometimes I just seem to have an “upset” stomach. No rhyme or reason to it, at least that I can figure it out. If it’s not severe and doesn’t continue, I don’t sweat it.

I wish I exercised! I know it would be good for me. :sob: Good for you!

I’ve just started in the last 2 years Marianne. I did walk semi-regularly for about 20 years, but wasn’t serious about my diet until I ended up with T2. Now I feel like crud when I don’t exercise so one reason I think I may have caught something. It’s not bad at all though so I think my immune system is way better thanks to Keto, and some Vit. C, zinc, and a blend of echinacea/goldenseal I started as soon as I started feeling like I might be getting something, which actually was about a week ago, but before I started using the collagen

Hi Denise. I’ve definitely had improvement in my hair and nails from taking collagen powder. I take it in my coffee with some extra thick cream

(Denise) #11

It thickens my coffee just a bit which I really like. It’s good to know you actually see the changes in your hair and nails  You’re the second person that mentioned thick cream for your coffee and it’s making me want to get some of the real stuff! I’ve been using Silk Almond unsweetened vanilla for at least a year but I think I switched from real cream because I thought I had a dairy issue but I no longer think it’s dairy at all as I still have yogurt and cheese everyday with no ill effects.

I have been using collagen for years (3? 4?) And have never had a stomach issue. I notice a definite improvement in hair and nails, plus tendonitis. If I slack off taking it I will have ‘tennis elbow’ soon.

(Denise) #13

I would like to know more about the “type” of collagen you all use, don’t need brands, I can just compare collagen ingredients to see if what I’m taking is a good one? I should have asked just the main ingredients, and what to watch for in purchasing a collagen powder  ?

Sister!

If eating protein doesn’t do that, collagen (shouldn’t) since it’s only missing one amino that makes it actual protein. But looking up the Dr Axe one seems there’s also probiotics in it, could be whatever strains are in it are pissing off your gut bugs. Some people have that issue with probiotics that don’t agree with the rest of them, a guess, but really couldn’t be anything else.

(Denise) #16

Zero gut issue today, yahooooo, as I didn’t want to give up trying the collagen. I’ve been taking Vit C and zinc, and just last night started with the echinacea/goldenseal extract. I don’t know for sure why I felt so bad yesterday, and in the middle of the night but I am feeling very good today so far.

I was actually rather miffed last year to get a bad dose of both tennis and golfers elbow (which I still have) having been taking collagen powder for a good 3 years!!

#18

I have used various ones. Great Lakes, vital proteins and at the moment Tendoforte peptacol in case it helps more with above mentioned tennis/golfers elbow. No idea what type of collagen though.

I think it’s about a combo of things all working together. If something goes wrong with me, I’m hitting the books again, so to speak, to see what I might be lacking, or maybe eating/drinking something that’s effecting me. Also darn genetics sometimes get in their, but since keto, I have no more arthritis. I also take 500 mg of Mag citrate twice a day.

Here’s the one I use.
