Coffee

So im a big coffee drinker and have only just started keto this week. Im used to having 2 tsp of sugar and milk in my coffee but im having trouble with using stevia as a replacement to normal sugar, it doesnt taste sweet unless i use like 5 tsp of stevia. is that worse than having 2tsp of normal sugar? or is there any other thing that anyone can sugest to sweeten?

How about heavy whipped cream and no stevia nor sugar. That’s the route I finally ended up going. After a few weeks of putting in stevia, my taste buds changed, and it was gross. I had to decide to either give up being in ketosis or giving up stevia.

You are in the really early stage of getting your way to being fat adapted. Use whatever help you can get at the moment until you are indeed fat adapted. If you need more stevia go for it. Your taste buds will change. Also milk is not really on the ketogenic diet. Heavy whipped cream is.

Just ditch the sweetener, you’ll adjust.

Drop all sweeteners, go cold turkey, just add your fat like cream. Within a few days your taste buds will adapt and you will forget about sweeteners.

The only way to stop craving sweet things is to stop eating sweet things, even artificial sweet.

I cant stand coffee on its own. its way to bitter. so anything i can use to take the bitterness away?

@Thicktolean salt and/or HWC

Its just what you’re used to, I was the same. I just forced myself to drink decent coffee black and after a while I started enjoying it like that. This was partly due to not wanting to keep buying milk for the office which other people stole.

I experimented getting mine from small batch artisan roasters, and ended up preferring the lighter roasts - drinking it black you can really taste the different notes and flavours which you don’t get so much when you put milk/cream/sweeteners in it.

Pinch of salt.
But if you gave yourself a few days you would adapt, or just don’t drink coffee (I’m a self confessed caffeine addict so will understand if this isn’t an option!)

lol my partner told me the same thing about the salt, I did that yesterday and almost spat it back out. Whats HWC?

Heavy whipping cream - 35%

thanks everyone. Ill try the heavy whipped cream in black coffee and see how i go.

I’m also a double double coffee drinker. I’ve adapted to one packet of stevia and cream. On fasting days I just don’t have the coffee at all. Turned out not to be that big a deal. The mornings I drink coffee now, it’s honestly more a habit and the motions of having my cup to drink while reading the morning paper and not the actual desire for coffee.

I was this way. I ended up changing my coffee ground from dark to a medium brew grinds. I brew my coffee, fill up my coffee cup, then put a little bit of water to further dilute it just a tiny bit. THEN, I can drink it black and (I know this will be shocking) I don’t even feel sorry for myself, anymore. LOL

This was a process, trying different things, and it took me several weeks to get to this point of giving up my beloved HWC and artificial sweetener in my morning coffee.

Every once in a while, I will have a coffee with HWC and artificial sweetener in my eating window.

Something that I have for when I go out to a restaurant is packets of Truvia sweetener for my coffee there. They usually don’t have sweeteners that I want so I take my own. It’s a blend of erythritol and stevia. To me, it tastes about as good as sugar in my coffee.

Erythritol isn’t as sweet as sugar but stevia is way sweeter. Some people like the blend of the two.

For my coffee at home, I have two bottles of SweatLeaf liquid sweeteners. (It comes in a bunch of different flavors.) I have one that’s chocolate and I put a few drops of that in the coffee. I have another that’s sweet and vanilla flavored and I put a few drops of that in my coffee, too. All of that in addition to the heavy whipping cream. It’s not all that sweet but it’s what I’ve become accustomed to. I don’t require a large amount of sweetness to satisfy me, just a hint of it will do. But I really miss it if there is none at all so I can relate.

You just have to find something that will work for you. I had a hard time trying to replace the Baileys creamer, which I loved back before keto, which had both the smooth and creamy texture, and the sweetness. Heavy whipping cream does the smooth and creamy part. The sweetness is more of a challenge but it’s doable.

Good luck

It has to be just the tiniest amount or it’s vile

My wife and I were the same, always putting sweetener in our coffee. We not just use heavy cream, with no sugar, and you do get used to it.

A little bit of salt takes the bitterness out of coffee.

I first encountered heavy/whipping cream in coffee on a cruise where the barista served something called a cafe melange (espresso and cream). The heavy cream imparted a nutty sweetness that I really like.

Now I ask for my coffee with heavy cream (because asking for whipping cream could create confusion) and so far Starbucks and Peet’s have done a fine job with my request.

I have many hunger triggers (stress, food commercials, looking at recipes, planning a meal, smelling food etc.) and any kind of sweetener will mess with my desired state of satiety and contentment.

We call it a Heavy Cream Latte here.

(John B) #21

We only use a tablespoon of heavy cream (maybe two) in our coffee. We used to get Starbucks Latte’s made with heavy cream, which they have, but my research revealed that they use 12-14 oz of cream per latte, which would increase the carbs by quite a bit.
