Coffee, fasting and autophagy

(Julian Strickland) #1

Hi all

I have a question regarding coffee and prolonged fasting. First prolonged fast and last day now, day 5. I’ve drunk one to two day and just water. My question is through research I’ve noted that some studies show that coffee stimulates autophagy in muscles heart and liver. Others say that it stimulates insulin and hence will prevent autophagy. Can some one help with this ?

Dr. Fung addressed this in the Q&A episode of the Obesity Code podcast.

Coffee, like any other addictive substance that has a lot of people making a lot of money from it, needs to be regarded with care.

When asked about coffee possibly stopping autophagy, Dr. Fung said (in a video I saw on YouTube) that they don’t know for sure.

Because of that, patients that are fasting for potential cancer benefits from autophagy are recommended water and salt. (Might be an old video - but since autophagy details are always coming out - water and salt is probably a good idea if you want to be sure.)
