Help! My mother has been watching the BBC again and this time they were saying that coconut oil is dangerous and bad for you. She is now in a panic. Does anyone have any links to studies/science that show the benefits of coconut oil? I had search on the forum and could not find anything. Any help is useful otherwise I might have to take her TV away…
Coconut Oil Science
If you believe that LDL is bad for you, then the fact that Saturated fats can slightly raise LDL levels might be considered therefore harmful, and as Coconut oil is 80% saturated it therefore follows that if you believe LDL is bad then Coconut oil is bad.
But Saturated fats will raise HDL (good) cholesterol more than LDL (“bad”), and if you are low carb then your LDL will mostly be non atherogenic and benign. So in the context of a low carb diet Coconut oil may be very good for you.
Victoria, I think you should start cutting headlines from newspapers and magazines which are intended to scare people. In several months you should have a sheaf of them saying all sorts of foolish and contradictory things. When one headline bashes eggs, for example, you can whip out your cutting that declares they are a miracle food.
