Hi, been on keto for about 4 months, mainly to get rid of headaches and joint pain and it is working.
however now i have developed this issue of diarrhea. is it common to have this problem on keto? and what are some things i can do to stop this from happening.
thanks.
Chronic Diarrhea on keto please help!
Short answer: No, it’s not common.
Longer answer: Please provide more details about yourself, any medical conditions or physical things that might be pertinent. Also, what exactly are you eating? Details, not generalities: macros, foods and amounts, total calories. Diarrhea usually results from incompatible food choices. It could also result from sensitivities to some foods and or unbalanced electrolytes. If you’ve changed what you’re eating now from what you were eating before the diarrhea started, what exactly? How much?
I bought a bag of psyllium husks for cooking. I found out that if I take only 1/4th of a teaspoon which I wash down with a few sips of water. it works against diarrhoea.
38 yo, 6,4" 163 lbs. intake 2000-2500 cals per day., Grass fed fatty cuts of any meats, bacon, eggs, olives /oils, avocados, peanut butter, pecans, walnuts, cheese, sour cream, wild caught salmon, shrimp, salads and any leafy greens. NO coconut or MCT oils. for fruit i eat blueberries and raspberries. Been eating the same way since i started keto nothing has really changed.
Unless you’ve had diarrhea for the entire 4 months, something changed. Figure out what that is and you’ll be over the problem. Maybe some combination of foods don’t mix well. Maybe cut back on fat a little to see if that helps. Have you been sick? Do you know what dysentery is?
How to stop it regardless: cream cheese. Every day until it stops.
well the only thing that i did change was not a food, i stopped drinking bottled water, and started drinking zero sugar gatorade for more electrolytes.
Well, there you go. Stop the Gatorade and see if the diarrhea goes away. It could be the artificial sweetener that is messing with your digestive tract.
ill stop drinking the gatorade today, and post back here in a week or so for an update.
thanks for every ones help. i hope this fixes the problems.
If it does turn out to be the sweetener, they do make electrolyte enhanced bottled water like Smartwater. Hope you feel better soon!
Update: it’s been 5 days now with no artificial sweeteners. Unfortunately it seems I still have the same problem I uped my fiber to 40g but now it’s putting me over 50g carbs per day
I got it at my local pharmacy. Maybe also a health food store. It also comes in the form of capsules called Metamucil. It worked like a charm for me. I took very little.
