I hear a lot about childhood obesity, and I look at myself and how have I gotten so fat. When I was young (I just turned 51 over the weekend so, I guess that tells how long ago that was). We never had fast food, we rarely had junk food in the house, and not a lot of sweets. Snacks were peanut butter with crackers, homemade dill pickles. We raised what we ate, garden, eggs, poultry, goats, sheep, beef, pigs, rabbits. My mother would fry up fresh pork steaks basically a ham not cured just cut into thick slices, and before she would fry it, she would cut off some of the fat around the outside, cut it into small chunks and fry till crisp, drain on a paper towel, salt the crap out of them and we would fight over them, they were so good, crispy bits of pork fat. She melted down the lard strip and that is what she used for frying, she didn’t use canola oil, corn, oil, vegetable oil. She made all the bread we ate, mostly an old dark molasses oatmeal bread. We went out for hours to pick wild blueberries to fill the freezer. We ate heart, tongue, liver, pig kidneys, nothing was prefab or fast food. And we had ponies from the time we were able to ride, we rode them everywhere bareback. We were gone from the time we got up in the morning, till it was dark all summer long, I have often asked my mother “didn’t you ever worry about us”, she said “Back then there was nothing to worry about”. We were tiny skinny little things working in the garden doing chores before and after school, and riding those ponies, I look back now and wonder how they survived. I guess if you look at most kids today and how we lived back then, the whole lifestyle difference is what I think is leading to child hood obesity.

Everything is different. As a kid, I was gone for 8-12 hour stretches, playing with friends, virtually no parental supervision. We came home sorta when we wanted. Any hunger pains went away because we were having too much fun.
In my new “Weight theory” … fat (at any age) attracts more fat. (for many reasons). (I am sure this isn’t a new idea).
As soon as you start adding fat, it is hard to stop.
When you start young, you just get fatter younger.
If you can just avoid those first 10 lbs of fat, maybe almost no one gets fat ? Or a lot less.
Don’t forget ! kids gain weight every year. maybe more than adults !
They just look thin because the body puts the energy into Growing. Not fat storing.
