Cheating with treats

(Rosemary Easter) #1

I just listened to the 2Ketodudes Thanksgiving podcast, a bit late I know, and I was pleased to hear one of the ladies say that she came down hard on people posting on her Facebook page saying they had a cheat meal or treat and others saying that’s ok as you’re only human and therefore encouraging others to cheat too.
I belong to a Keto Facebook group and at Thanksgiving last year there were lots of comments about how it would be stupid not to indulge, it’s only once a year etc. etc. and getting lots of support. I am English so I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving but I made a cake for Christmas using Sukrin for the first time and all other ingredients were keto too. I was still using Cron-O-meter to track macros and was horrified by how many carbs were in Sukrin. (I have only been Keto for 4 months). Therefore I asked on this FB group about Sukrin and was told about sugar alcohol, however I was also castigated by a few people , one of them an administrator, about the folly of having cake and that I should not make a habit of it . I explained that because it was Christmas I was making a cake that all the family could eat. (Also at the age of 63 I really do not need young women telling me how to suck eggs.)
Then I got comments about how it would cause runny tums and one wise guy said he hoped I had enough toilets!
Now, it didn’t bother me one bit, but I cannot understand how me making a keto cake got frowned upon but all these other people still having cheat treats get praise.
People are very weird!

It’s all a bunch of gum flappin’.

I hope you all enjoyed your keto cake, and guilt free!

People have a tendency to get in everyone else’s business like it was their own. If they’re addicted to the taste of something sweet, they think that no one can ever, ever have a sweet sugar-free treat, ever, ever, because if they do, they’ll eat the kitchen sink, the family dog, and 5,211 pounds of raw sugar before the sun goes down again… yada, yada, yada. Paleeeze.

If you’re truly addicted to sweet things and they’ll rule your life if you don’t get them, it’s probably not a good idea to indulge. If you’re truly allergic to or have a bad reaction to artificial sweeteners, it’s probably not a good idea to indulge. There really are people who fall into those categories. Quite a lot of us do not.

Enjoy your keto cake if it works for you. Enjoy your sweet treat from time to time if it works for you. If there comes a time when it’s really not working for you, worry about it then.

 KCKO

You don’t live your life for them. Live it for you. You chose to be Keto and healthy, but if you want to do something else for a special holiday or what not that is your choice. I wouldn’t worry about what others think. Your results are yours. Keep up the good work!

Welcome Rosemary. I made a flourless chocolate torte. Bit too dry, but definitely worth doing again. Took it to a potluck.

Sounds nice! Yes, paleo and keto cakes always dry. I always put a grated carrot (you don’t notice it when cooked) in my cakes to add a bit of moisture.

You can use zucchini (courgette for you Brits ) too.

I’ve eaten nearly 2 full low-carb cheesecakes in the last month and I’m still losing weight. Maybe not as fast, but I’m enjoying eating them, learning more about baking & cooking in general and still achieving my weight loss goals.

If I was stalling, then I’d have to say that I’d ditch the baking in an instant. I could live without it to get where I want to be.

If you’re getting what you want out of Keto, enjoy your treats and KCKO!

I am going to make a keto cheesecake next week, love it!

(Rosemary Easter) #9

Yes, I have used it, it is moister than carrot.

I just made one a couple days ago.

The recipe is here: Keto Cheesecake with Pecan Almond Crust

It’s soooooooo good. Been having a piece a day and I’ll be sad when we’ve finally eaten it all.
…but then I suppose I could make another one :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t forget to make time for some delicious keto cookies!

Aren’t the self appointed Police irritating?

Doesn’t matter if they are pontificating on road speed, keto, the correct way to clean a toilet, or how many grams of wood alcohol a day is permissible under their dictatorship…

(Rob) #13

They look great! Do you have a recipe for them?

(Rob) #14

That one is on my list to try too, though it’s in competition against @Brenda’s chocolate cake to get done next. It’s frustrating that when I’m fasting I have so few (self imposed) opportunities to eat!

(Garry (Canada)) #15

You can find both recipes here.

Way less carbs too, which is always a good thing! :+1:

(Sophie) #17

Those look really good!

(Rosemary Easter) #18

Agree!!! But I don’t understand why? I couldn’t care less what other people do!

Indulgence in occasional keto-friendly treats can be a stress reducer & help manage cortisol levels. Also, long-term compliance is the most important factor in successful weight loss, so being as flexible as possible without being unhealthy is useful. Don’t let puritans ketoshame you.

That said, I’m not a fan of Sukrin personally, I prefer Lakanto monk fruit/erythritol blend or allulose.

Do what works for you. I could not give 2 shits about anyone else’s take on what I eat or don’t eat. I was never a big sweets eater but if my friend makes a keto cake or sweet treat I am going to try it for sure. Why the hell not? I know that it will not make me “fall off the keto wagon”
