Can someone help explain these results as fairly concerned and not sure what to do

You said you’ve been 6 months keto, are you checking your levels with a meter? Did you ever find out your poor circulation problem?

Converting those numbers for those in the US:
Trigs: 367.5
Total chol: 395.7
HDL: 27.79
Non hdl: 367.9

The trig to hdl ratio is reaaaallly out of range. A ratio of more than 6 is considered high and yours is at 13. What have you been eating? What meds are you taking? Are you diagnosed with anything?

Sorry did I say 6… actually 3 or more…
Not been diagnosed with anything as never had any major health issues.
No meds.
Was tracking on mfp and always more or less hitting macros
Never got to bottom or poor circulation.seems to have sorted itself out.
Was at docs today and they will not do routine cholesterol checks.
Last check was 2015 and total cholesterol was 5.5

You had said 6 months in your blood circulation post, thanks for clarifying.

Trig’s being that high is definitely not representative of a keto diet. Usually, Trigs come down way low. To clarify some of my earlier questions:

  1. Are you using a blood glucose meter that can read blood ketone levels? If not, are you just assuming you’re in ketosis?

  2. You said you were hitting your macros, what are those macros?

  3. Are you ingesting any artificial sweeteners? I ask because, without a meter, you won’t know which one is giving an insulin response, which doesn’t help on keto.

  4. What is your age and current weight?

I had very similar results at three months in, are you still losing weight? My results improved significantly once I had reached my goal weight and stopped flooding my blood with liberated body fat…

Three months in my trigs were up to 7.98 from 2.44 pre-keto. At six months (goal weight) they were 1.22

3 months in HDL was 0.8, down from 1.02 pre-keto. At six months back up to 1.39

Your body is still adapting to the changes going on in you, I was worried when I got my results but after asking around decided to stick with it for another three months and test again. I was glad I did.

Not using a blood ketone tester . I used strips at first. I am able to fast without hunger so assuming fat adopted.
Always under 20g carbs, moderate protein
Not bother with sweeteners
Current age 38 and 80kg
Lost weight about 8.5kg and mainly noticed waist reduction and simply changes

How long were you fasted before the blood draw? Coffee or anything?

(Moriarty Philip) #8

I was fasting about 12 hrs and no coffee before either

A1c ?
Pre Keto labs ?

(Moriarty Philip) #10

Test not include a1c
Last test was 2015 and total cholesterol was 5.5

That’s a big change !

Got these comments back from lab…comments for your results below: Your triglycerides are high. Common causes for this include eating prior to the test, alcohol and diabetes. High levels of triglycerides can lead to an increased risk of heart disease as well as damage to the pancreas. I recommend discussing this result further with your GP. You have very high cholesterol with low levels of protective HDL cholesterol and high levels of damaging non HDL cholesterol. Yours are at a level which suggests that there is likely to be a genetic component to your high cholesterol, i.e. even with a healthy diet and lots of oily fish it is likely that you would still have high cholesterol. I recommend discussing these results further with your GP.

It’s not genetic unless you changed your genes between tests. :+1:

I started in April. Do you suggest I wait six months to have my blood tested?

(Moriarty Philip) #15

I am due for a retest in June so will see what difference there is. Docs referred me to a dietician because of my unhealthy eating!!!

(Carol AnCel) #16

You may want to read and try this before your next text just to prove to yourself that the numbers can be off for many reasons in that moment of time.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #17

Keep us posted. My triglycerides were 209 which was unheard of for me and very unhealthy. Don’t really have a sweet tooth but was guzzling milk and eating too much pasta. Hope giving those up will help. Was shocked to find out the number of carbs I was getting through milk alone. I’m going on four weeks and don’t even think about milk or pasta anymore, which is great.

Nothing really to update on. Doctors referred me to dietician but have not been. Also due to re-test bloods next month.

I’m at 3 months, 35yo around 90kg now (was about 110kg when I started) and my results are worse by traditional measures than when I began, total cholesterol at 336 mg/dl and LDL high at 259, about 100 points up from my carbage days, trigs have gone up too. I’ve decided it’s just transitory and I’ll get tested again when my weight stabilises - I’m not worried, in the mean time I’ll use my scary numbers to get my doctor to refer me for some fancier tests
