Calling all matcha drinkers!

(Stickin' with mammoth) #1

After searching and destroying all magnesium- and calcium-leaching culprits in the kitchen, I’ve decided I may have to ghost coffee. (sob!)

I’ve been a matcha drinker before and loved it but I brewed it from scratch. In the name of ease and simplicity, I’m going the powdered route this time and it dawns on me that matcha fat bombs would make everything super-easy. We have a gigantic Japanese foods store here in Portland called Uwajimaya that I hear has quite the matcha aisle, so I’ll probably target that first. I just wish I could read Japanese.

What brands of powdered matcha do you like?
What was the cost and where do you get it?
Any advice about making it into fat bombs?
Has anyone been able to nail down the carbs in this stuff? (I’ve seen 0.4g to 1g)

Thanks!

omg matcha fatbombs??? you are genius

Edit: Sorry for not answering your original question, I don’t know of any good brands off the top of my head

Excellent mention, Baconmecrazy. Never had heard of it, but it looks like it’s mighty good for you.

I know, right? I also make fat bombs with raw cacao which is chock full of nutritional goodies. I try to ingest as much natural magic as I can.

OK, I went on a multi-grocery matcha mission today and I came back with Sei Mee Tea matcha, which I’m happy to note is organic, ground locally, and yet cheaper at our Uwajimaya than on Amazon. Yee-haw.

I resisted buying a fancy-schmancy tea bowl and accompanying bamboo matcha tea whisk, called a chasen, because both were priced much, much more than the tea, itself. But there’s a technique that allows you to incorporate all that green, powdery goodness just fine without it. Also, cold brewing sounds agreeable or just shaking it all up in a Nalgene bottle. I’m adding a few drops of Bourbon vanilla, a dash of Stevia, and a splash of HWC. Oh, yes, there will be HWC.

I couldn’t wait to get…matcha-ing? match-ching? matchinating?..and I have good news.

Matcha had me at the first sip, I am completely sold. I was worried about giving up my beloved java but I have completely switched camps. This stuff is so good, I’m already on my second cup. I’ve included my matcha hack below and I’ll let you know when I’ve created the perfect fat bomb with it. You’ve got to try a latte with this stuff!

8 ounces hot water
Tiny bit more than 1/2 teaspoon matcha powder
1/4 teaspoon stevia
3 drops Bourbon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons 40% heavy whipping cream

I ended up making matcha fat bombs to complement my fat fast over the weekend.
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp cream
about 1 tbsp erythritol
Heated those three until the erythritol was fairly well dissolved and incorporated
Then I added
2 oz cocoa butter
2 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp matcha

Mixed all that together and poured it into small silicone molds and put in the freezer.
I think I used a tad too much matcha as it’s rather strong, so I think next time I’ll do 1/2 a tbsp or 2/3 a tbsp, but other than that because of the cocoa butter it reminds me of green tea kitkats!

After watching a few You Tube videos, I realized I essentially just hacked Starbuck’s green tea latte drink, except mine won’t cause your insulin to spike like a stalagmite.

I need to try this!!

(jilliangordona) #10

You may have converted me… I’ve been thinking about giving up coffee… hmmm

It’s nummy, like seriously nummy. Very smooth and mild. Get the loose powder, not the tea bags, and make sure it’s a quality somewhere in the middle, called “culinary” grade. Unless you’re rich, then get the “ceremonial” grade. And send me some.

And if you like it cold, you can forget all that stirring and whisking–just shake it, baby!

(jilliangordona) #12

I have some… but I bought it on Amazon a while ago. I love the taste biut wasn’t health motivated enough to make the switch

@richard has posted on matcha, perhaps it was more in the old FB group.

I just ordered these.

I’ll report back once I’ve given both of them a try and done a blind taste comparison… :+1:t2::sunglasses:

I mixed coconut cream with flax milk, stevia, and matcha this morning!! Yum.

Excellent. Here’s the thing about flavor, though: everybody says the ceremonial grade is “lighter” and the culinary grade is more “robust.” I’m the robust type so it kinda makes me glad I can’t afford the high-end stuff for the first time since tasting Johnny Walker Blue Label. Twenty years later and I’m still trying to get that taste out of my mouth.

I was hoping somebody would mention the coconut treatment, there’s even a cocktail. You know, for medicinal purposes. Okay, it’s not really a cocktail but I’m ketofying this and adding rum. Because rum.

Original:

Lime Zillah

Premix: 12 oz Limeade and
6 oz Vanilla syrup.

Blend 1+1/2 cup from the above mixture with 1/2 cup ice.
Mix in 1 scoop Edible Green.
This makes 12 oz Lime Zillah.

Ketofied:

Lime juice, sweetener of choice, coconut cream, matcha, and rum.

…Holy crap, there are matcha mousse recipes out there! Google, you vile tempter.

(Jacquelyn Graham) #18

Nom Nom Paleo has a great matcha gummies recipe. They came out great and are very tasty. http://nomnompaleo.com/2017/04/11/201704112017041120170411matcha-coconut-gummies

(Stickin' with mammoth) #19

Hmm, looks like the mousse recipes, only with more liquid. Mousse chunks, purse mousse.

(Jacquelyn Graham) #20

 I think you wouldn’t be able to carry them for long in a purse, they would probably liquefy a bit unless you carried a cold pack, too. They are very more-ish, I can vouch for that.
